Nicole Kidman's height: 180 cm (5′11″)
Nicole Kidman is listed at 180 cm (5′11″), the figure recorded on Wikidata and the one this site uses. Unusually for a film star, the strongest source for her height is Kidman herself, speaking about it at length. In an interview with Radio Times, reported by Salon in January 2024, she confirmed that she is 5′11″ and explained that, early in her career, she used to shave half an inch off when asked, giving her height as about 5′10½″ because she had been told she was too tall to work.

That makes Kidman one of the tallest leading actresses of her generation and one of the few whose height has been an openly discussed part of her career story, in her own words, rather than a matter of fan speculation.
"Too tall" for a career: what Kidman has said
Kidman's comments to Radio Times, as summarized by Salon, describe a career built partly in spite of her height. She recalled being told directly that she would not have a career because she was too tall, and fielding the familiar teasing question about how the air was up there. That was the reason she began rounding her height down by half an inch when casting directors asked.
Her height was an issue even before she was an adult. She told the magazine that as a child she was 5′4″ when she wanted to audition for a production of Annie, which had a height cutoff of 5′2″. She was allowed to try out, but got no callback, and she joked that at least she got to sing four lines of a chorus.
Today the reaction is different, she said: people tell her she is taller than they expected. She added that she is sometimes given red-carpet shoes so high that she would look like a giraffe in them. The arc of those comments, from a teenager told her height would hold her back to an Oscar winner who jokes about it, is a useful corrective to the idea that leading actresses must be petite.
From Honolulu and Sydney to Hollywood
Kidman was born on 20 June 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii, where her Australian father, Antony Kidman, was a graduate student at the University of Hawaii. The family later lived in Washington, D.C., before returning to Australia when she was about three, and she grew up in Sydney. Her father, a biochemist and psychologist, died in 2014. She holds both Australian and American citizenship. Reliable sources do not publish her parents' or her sister's heights, so this page does not speculate about them.
She began acting in Australia in 1983, with Bush Christmas and BMX Bandits, and broke through internationally with the 1989 thriller Dead Calm and the miniseries Bangkok Hilton. Her career since has been one of the most varied in Hollywood:
| Year | Project | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1989 | Dead Calm | International breakthrough |
| 1990 | Days of Thunder | First film with Tom Cruise |
| 1995 | Batman Forever; To Die For | Blockbuster and acclaimed dark comedy |
| 1999 | Eyes Wide Shut | Third film with Cruise; Stanley Kubrick's final film |
| 2001 | Moulin Rouge!; The Others | Musical lead and gothic horror |
| 2002 | The Hours | Best Actress Oscar as Virginia Woolf |
| 2008 | Australia | Opposite Hugh Jackman |
| 2016 | Lion | Oscar-nominated supporting role |
| 2017– | Big Little Lies | HBO series she also produced |
| 2018 | Aquaman | Queen Atlanna, mother of Jason Momoa's hero |
| 2021 | Being the Ricardos | As Lucille Ball, opposite Javier Bardem |
| 2024 | Babygirl | Lead role |
The Academy's records confirm her Best Actress win for The Hours at the 75th Academy Awards in March 2003. She also founded the production company Blossom Films in 2010 and was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2006.
The Annie audition and growing up tall
Kidman's story about the Annie audition gives a rare documented glimpse of a celebrity's childhood height. At 5′4″ (about 163 cm) when the production's cutoff was 5′2″ (157 cm), she was already taller than many adult women; the average Australian woman born in the 1950s, her mother's generation, stood about 163 cm according to NCD-RisC. In other words, the young Kidman had reached roughly adult average height while still a child, and she went on to grow another 17 cm or so.
Tall children often hear the same comments she described, and their experiences in performing arts can be mixed. Many youth productions cast by height so that children look the right age next to each other, which is why a height limit existed for the orphans in Annie. For a tall girl, that can mean being passed over for roles written for younger characters. Kidman's later recollection that she was nonetheless allowed to audition, and treasured singing a few lines, shows how those early setbacks fed into the persistence she credits for her career.
Kidman and Tom Cruise: the most-discussed height gap
Kidman married Tom Cruise in 1990, after they met on Days of Thunder, and they divorced in 2001. During those years they were one of the most photographed couples in the world, and the height difference between them was frequently remarked on by the press. On this site Cruise is listed at 170 cm, so Kidman is about 10 cm (4 inches) taller barefoot.
They made three films together: Days of Thunder (1990), Far and Away (1992) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). In each, standard filmmaking techniques such as footwear, blocking and framing handled the difference, as they do for any pair of actors of different heights.
A 10 cm gap with the woman taller is relatively uncommon. Because men are on average about 13 to 14 cm taller than women in both the United States and Australia, according to the NCD-RisC averages on this site, most couples drawn at random would have a taller man, and a woman who is 10 cm taller than her partner sits well outside the typical pattern. You can visualize the Kidman-Cruise pairing, or any other, with the height difference calculator.
Kidman was later married to country singer Keith Urban from 2006; Wikipedia records that marriage as ending in divorce in 2026. She has two children from each marriage.

Aquaman: the queen who is shorter than her son
In Aquaman (2018), Kidman played Atlanna, queen of Atlantis and mother of Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry. At 180 cm she is tall by any standard, yet Momoa is about 15.6 cm taller, one of the few cases in her filmography where a co-star noticeably towers over her.
Australia: two tall Australians
Baz Luhrmann's Australia (2008) paired Kidman with Hugh Jackman, who at 190.5 cm is about 10.5 cm taller. It is one of the few romantic leads in her career where the man is substantially taller, which allowed classic framing without any adjustments.
Big Little Lies: an unusually tall ensemble
In HBO's Big Little Lies, Kidman, Laura Dern (179 cm) and Shailene Woodley (173 cm) were part of a female ensemble that was taller than many on screen. Kidman and Dern are within about a centimeter of each other.
How 180 cm compares with women in Australia and the United States
Kidman grew up in Australia and has spent much of her adult life in the United States, so both countries offer useful benchmarks. According to NCD-RisC estimates used on this site, Australian women born in 1976, the closest cohort to her 1967 birth year, average 164.9 cm; American women of the same cohort average 164.0 cm.
| Benchmark | Average | Kidman's difference |
|---|---|---|
| Women, Australia, 1976 cohort (NCD-RisC) | 164.9 cm | +15.1 cm |
| Women, Australia, 1956 cohort (NCD-RisC) | 163.4 cm | +16.6 cm |
| Women, United States, 1976 cohort (NCD-RisC) | 164.0 cm | +16.0 cm |
| US women 50–59, 95th percentile (NHANES 2021–2023) | 172.4 cm | +7.6 cm |
| Men, Australia, 1976 cohort (NCD-RisC) | 178.6 cm | +1.4 cm |
The NHANES comparison shows just how unusual her height is. The CDC's 2021–2023 survey puts the 95th percentile for American women aged 50 to 59 at 172.4 cm. Kidman is almost 8 cm above that line, placing her among a very small fraction of women her age. She is even about 1.4 cm taller than the average Australian man of her generation. The Australia average height page shows how Australian heights have changed over the past century, and the 180 cm conversion page explains the conversion in detail.
Tall actresses in Hollywood: where Kidman fits
Kidman is part of a group of leading actresses at or near 5′11″, though there are fewer of them than tall leading men. Using heights stored on this site:
| Actress | Height (site data) | Difference from Kidman |
|---|---|---|
| Geena Davis | 183 cm (6′0″) | +3 cm |
| Sigourney Weaver | 182 cm (5′11.5″) | +2 cm |
| Uma Thurman | 181 cm (5′11″) | +1 cm |
| Taylor Swift (for comparison) | 180 cm (5′11″) | 0 cm |
| Charlize Theron | 177 cm (5′9.5″) | −3 cm |
| Gwyneth Paltrow | 175 cm (5′9″) | −5 cm |
| Sandra Bullock | 171 cm (5′7″) | −9 cm |
| Margot Robbie | 167.6 cm (5′6″) | −12.4 cm |
What sets Kidman apart is not just her height but the range of roles she has played despite early warnings that her height would limit her. She has played a 1920s English novelist, a Parisian cabaret star, a 1950s television icon, a Southern Gothic schoolmistress and an Atlantean queen, and her height was a defining feature of none of them.
Height and screen presence
Directors and costume designers often adapt to a lead actor's height in small ways, and Kidman's career shows several of them. Because many of her male co-stars are close to her height or shorter, productions have relied on familiar tools: flat shoes for her, slightly raised marks for shorter partners, and framing that keeps both faces in the shot. For a performer known for close-up work, as critics noted of her performance in To Die For, these adjustments are mostly invisible to audiences.
Her height has also shaped her public image as a fashion figure. The BBC named her a fashion icon in 2003, and the chartreuse Dior gown she wore to the 1997 Academy Awards is often cited as one of the most influential Oscar dresses. Tall frames tend to suit long column gowns, which helps explain why her red carpet looks have been so widely discussed. Her own comment about being offered shoes that would make her look like a giraffe suggests that, these days, she is more likely to go lower than higher.
Summary
Nicole Kidman stands 180 cm (5′11″), a figure she confirmed herself in a 2024 Radio Times interview, where she also revealed that she used to say she was half an inch shorter to get auditions after being told she was too tall for a career. She is about 15 cm taller than the average Australian or American woman of her generation, above the 95th percentile for American women her age, and roughly level with the average Australian man. She stood about 10 cm taller than Tom Cruise during their marriage and is about 15 cm shorter than Jason Momoa, her on-screen son in Aquaman.
