For a man

~50thpercentile

5′9″ is around the 50th percentile for US men: taller than about 50% of US adult men. It is about the same height as the average US man (175.1 cm).

For a woman

>95thpercentile

5′9″ is above the 95th percentile for US women: taller than about 95% of US adult women. It is 14.1 cm (5.6 in) taller than the average US woman (161.2 cm). An average woman standing alongside would reach about their mouth.

Percentiles are interpolated from the published 5th–95th percentile table for adults aged 20+ (CDC NHANES 2021–2023) and are approximate. See the height percentile calculator for children and other countries.

The math behind 5′9″

Five feet nine inches is 69 inches: 5 × 12 = 60, and 60 + 9 = 69. At 2.54 cm per inch, that is 175.26 cm, or 1.75 m. The 2.54 factor is exact; the US National Institute of Standards and Technology explains that the inch has been defined as 0.0254 meters since the international yard and pound agreement announced in 1959.

Rounded to whole centimeters, 5′9″ becomes 175 cm, the figure most metric profiles use. The reverse conversion is just as comfortable: 175 cm is 68.9 inches and 176 cm is 69.3 inches, both rounding to 5′9″. The 175 cm page has the metric-first view.

Format 5′9″
Centimeters 175.26 cm
Meters 1.7526 m
Total inches 69 in
Decimal feet 5.75 ft
Nearest whole cm 175 cm
Range that rounds to 5′9″ about 174 to 176.5 cm

Like 5′6″ and 5′3″, 5′9″ has a tidy decimal-foot form, 5.75 ft, because nine inches is three quarters of a foot. Don't confuse that with "5.9 feet," which is 5′10.8″.

The median American man, to the millimeter

The headline fact about 5′9″ is that it is the middle of the American male height distribution. The CDC's National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for August 2021 to August 2023 measured a nationally representative sample of adults, and the median for men aged 20 and over came out at 175.2 cm, with a mean of 175.1 cm. 5′9″ is 175.26 cm. Half of American men are taller, half shorter, and the dividing line is 5′9″ within less than a millimeter.

Interpolating within each age band:

Group (NHANES 2021–2023) Median 5′9″ percentile
Men 20+ 175.2 cm about 50th
Men 20–29 176.1 cm about 46th
Men 30–39 176.4 cm about 44th
Men 40–49 176.2 cm about 45th
Men 50–59 174.5 cm about 54th
Men 60–69 175.0 cm about 51st
Men 70–79 172.7 cm about 65th
Men 80+ 169.9 cm about 76th
Women 20+ 161.2 cm above 95th

Among men under 50, 5′9″ is a touch below the median, because the youngest cohorts measure about 176 cm. Among men in their seventies and eighties it is clearly above average. That spread reflects both age-related height loss and the shorter average height of men born earlier, which a single survey cannot separate. For women, 5′9″ is beyond the 95th percentile in every age group; the 95th percentile for all women aged 20 and over was 172.5 cm. The height percentile calculator performs this interpolation for any input.

Mean or median: does it matter?

For height, hardly at all. Adult height is close to symmetrically distributed, so the mean and median nearly coincide, 175.1 and 175.2 cm in this survey. That is why you can say "the average American man is about 5′9″" without worrying about which average is meant. A useful contrast is the UK Millennium Cohort Study of parents with babies born in 2000, which recorded fathers' self-reported heights averaging 177.86 cm. Some of that difference may be the known tendency to overstate height in self-reports, which validation studies put at about 1.2 cm for men.

The 5′9″ line in basketball

Basketball uses 5′9″ as a historical cutoff for "short." According to the NBA's record of its shortest players, only 27 players listed at 5′9″ or shorter have ever played in the league, and every one of them was a point guard. The shortest player inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Calvin Murphy, was listed at exactly 5′9″. For comparison, the shortest players in league history, Muggsy Bogues at 5′3″ and Earl Boykins at 5′5″, stood 4 and 6 inches below that line.

Presidents and public figures at 5′9″

Two US presidents were 5′9″ (175 cm): Harry S. Truman and Millard Fillmore. They are tied as the shortest presidents who first entered the office by means other than election, both having taken over after a president's death. The average president is about 5′11″, so both men were roughly two inches below the presidential norm, though at the national average for men today.

Among people with their own pages on this site, those listed at 175 cm include actress Jennifer Lawrence, tennis player Coco Gauff and footballer Neymar, with singer Justin Bieber at 175.3 cm. The wider catalog adds Michael Jackson, Marlon Brando, Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ingrid Bergman, Leonard Cohen and Japanese prime minister Shinzō Abe at the same listed height. That mix of men and women at the same number is a good reminder that 5′9″ means "average" for one sex and "very tall" for the other.

5′9″ for women: models, dancers and cabin crew

For women, 5′9″ runs into several professional height conventions.

Fashion modeling. The typical height of female fashion models is 5′9″ and above, and the British Association of Model Agents gives a range of about 5′8″ to 5′11″. Male models are usually expected to be 5′11″ to 6′2″, so the same 5′9″ that opens doors for women is below the usual range for men.

Precision dance. From the mid-1960s, when the Radio City Rockettes accepted dancers from 5′5″ to 5′8″, a 5′9″ dancer would have been too tall. The later range of 5′6″ to 5′10½″ in stocking feet, used until 2022, placed 5′9″ comfortably inside.

Airline crew. One historical airline recruitment notice asked for women 5′2″ but no more than 5′9″, making 5′9″ the maximum. Today's airlines that keep height or reach rules typically want crew above about 152 cm and below about 185 cm, and 5′9″ fits that.

The world at 5′9″

The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration estimated average adult height by birth year in 200 countries from measured data on more than 18.6 million people. For those born in 1996:

Country Average man 5′9″ compared
South Korea 174.9 cm essentially the average man
Spain 176.6 cm 1.3 cm below average
United States 177.1 cm 1.8 cm below average
United Kingdom 177.5 cm 2.2 cm below average
Iran 173.6 cm 1.7 cm above average
Brazil 173.6 cm 1.7 cm above average
Netherlands 182.5 cm 7.2 cm below average

Note that the NCD-RisC estimate for American men born in 1996, 177.1 cm, is higher than the NHANES median for all men aged 20 and over because it describes one young cohort, while NHANES spans every adult age. No country's young women average 5′9″; the tallest in the 1996 cohort, in Latvia, average 169.8 cm. The average height hub compares every country.

Growing to 5′9″

On the CDC 2000 stature-for-age charts, used for ages 2 to 20 in the United States, 175.26 cm is reached at:

  • Boys, median: about 17 years. The median at 20 is about 176.8 cm, so 5′9″ is close to the median young man's final height.
  • Boys, 95th percentile: about 13 years 10 months.
  • Girls: even the 95th percentile curve stays below 5′9″ through age 20.

At age 20, 5′9″ is about the 41st percentile for young men on these charts and about the 97th for young women. The CDC charts are a reference population, not a target, and any concerns about a child's growth belong with a pediatrician.

5′9″ in couples, from both sides

Because 5′9″ is average for men and very tall for women, it produces two completely different couple-height pictures.

A 5′9″ man. With 5′9″ above the 95th percentile for women, almost every American woman is shorter than a 5′9″ man. The interesting question is the other end. In their analysis of more than 12,500 UK parent couples, Gert Stulp and colleagues found evidence for what they call the "male-not-too-tall" norm: couples in which the man was more than 25 cm taller occurred somewhat less often than random pairing would produce. For a 5′9″ man, a 25 cm gap means a partner under about 150 cm (4′11″), which is close to the 5th percentile for American women (149.6 cm in NHANES). In practice, nearly all of his potential partners fall inside the range couples tend to favor.

A 5′9″ woman. Here the arithmetic flips. Since 5′9″ is the median for men, roughly half of adult American men are shorter than she is. Under purely random pairing, she would be the taller partner about half the time. Real couples deviate from random pairing only modestly: in the UK study, the man was taller in 92.5% of couples against 89.8% expected by chance, and taller women tended to have smaller height gaps with their partners. Couples in which the woman is taller are common simply because of the numbers.

Height, pay and 5′9″

Economists have looked at whether being taller than average pays, and 5′9″ is a natural reference point because it is the middle. One widely cited study published in the Journal of Political Economy in 2004 estimated that each additional inch of height was associated with about 1.8% higher wages among men. The same researchers linked adult wages to height at age 16, estimating that each extra inch at 16 went with about 2.6% higher adult wages, which points to the social experiences of being a taller teenager as part of the explanation. On those estimates, a 6′0″ man would earn a few percent more on average than an otherwise similar 5′9″ man, but the variation among individuals swamps any such average.

Space and aviation at 5′9″

Height limits in aviation and spaceflight have usually been set by cockpit dimensions, and 5′9″ has fit comfortably inside them. When NASA selected its first astronauts for Project Mercury in 1959, candidates had to be shorter than 5′11″ to fit the capsule; the seven men chosen ranged from 5′7″ to 5′11″, so a 5′9″ pilot would have been right in the middle of that group. Current NASA astronaut requirements focus on education, experience and passing the long-duration flight physical rather than a published height range.

Measuring accurately at 5′9″

When you are right on the national median, half an inch decides whether you are "a bit below" or "a bit above average," so technique matters. Measure barefoot on a hard floor, with heels, buttocks and shoulder blades against a wall, gaze level, and a flat rigid object lowered onto the crown. Stature falls slightly over the morning; a study of schoolchildren in Southampton found a loss of about half a centimeter between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., with almost nothing after that. A midday measurement is the fairest single figure.

5′9″ beside other heights

5′9″ is one inch (2.54 cm) taller than 5′8″ and one inch shorter than 5′10″. Next to the median American woman, at 161.2 cm, a 5′9″ man stands about 14 cm (5½ inches) taller, close to the 14.11 cm average height gap recorded between partners in the UK Millennium Cohort Study. To compare 5′9″ with anyone else, use the height difference calculator, which draws both figures to scale.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5′9″ exactly the average height of an American man?

It is the median almost exactly. NHANES 2021–2023 measured the median US man aged 20 and over at 175.2 cm and the mean at 175.1 cm; 5′9″ is 175.26 cm, less than a millimeter away from the median.

Who is the shortest NBA Hall of Famer?

Calvin Murphy, listed at 5′9″ (1.75 m), is the shortest player inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Only 27 players listed at 5′9″ or shorter have ever played in the NBA.

Which US presidents were 5′9″?

Harry S. Truman and Millard Fillmore were both 5′9″ (175 cm). They are tied as the shortest presidents who first entered the office by a route other than election; both took over after a president died.

Is 5′9″ tall enough for a female fashion model?

Yes. Fashion models are typically 5′9″ and above for women, and the British Association of Model Agents gives a range of about 5′8″ to 5′11″. For men, 5′9″ falls short of the usual 5′11″ to 6′2″ range.

How rare is a 5′9″ woman?

Quite rare. The 95th percentile for US women aged 20 and over was 172.5 cm in NHANES 2021–2023, so a 5′9″ woman (175.26 cm) is taller than more than 95% of American women. On the CDC chart for age 20 she is around the 97th percentile.

Will a boy who is 5′9″ at 14 keep growing?

Usually some growth remains. On the CDC 2000 charts the median boy does not reach 5′9″ until about age 17, and a boy on the 95th percentile reaches it near 13 years 10 months. A pediatrician can assess an individual's growth stage.
