Nick Bosa's height and weight: the official numbers

Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers defensive end, is listed by the NFL and the team at 6′4″ (193 cm) and 266 lb (120.7 kg). Those are the figures on NFL.com and in the 49ers' 2025 media guide, and they are the values this site uses.

Unlike most celebrities, NFL players are measured precisely and publicly before they enter the league. At the 2019 scouting combine, Bosa measured 6′3¾″ and 266 lb, with 33-inch arms and 10¾-inch hands, according to the combine figures from NFL.com's prospect profile that Wikipedia reproduces; his wingspan was 6′5⅞″. In metric, 6′3¾″ is 192.4 cm. Teams and the league customarily round to the nearest inch for roster listings, which is how the combine's 6′3¾″ becomes the 6′4″ on his profile. The difference is less than a centimeter, and it is a good illustration of why football heights are far more trustworthy than most entertainment-industry heights: there is a measured number underneath the listing.

Measure Value
Listed height (NFL, 49ers) 6′4″ (193 cm)
Combine height (2019) 6′3¾″ (192.4 cm)
Listed weight 266 lb (120.7 kg)
Arm length 33 in
Hand size 10¾ in
Born 23 October 1997, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
College Ohio State
Drafted 2019, 1st round, 2nd overall (San Francisco)

Rounding works both ways

The Bosa brothers neatly show how roster rounding works. Nick measured 6′3¾″ (192.4 cm) and is listed at 6′4″ (193.0 cm), a rounding up of a quarter inch. Joey measured 6′5¼″ (196.2 cm) at his 2016 combine and is listed at 6′5″ (195.6 cm) on Wikipedia, a rounding down of a quarter inch. In both cases the official listing is within about 6 mm of the measured figure. Because a measured figure sits underneath the listing, football heights are among the most reliable height data available for any public figure. You can see how 193 cm converts on the site's 193 cm in feet page.

Combine numbers: how Bosa's body translated into athletic testing

The combine is where height and weight meet speed and power, and Bosa's results, as compiled by CBS Sports before the 2019 draft, show an unusual combination of size and quickness.

Drill Result
40-yard dash 4.79 s
Bench press (225 lb) 29 reps
Vertical jump 33.5 in
Broad jump 116 in (9′8″)
3-cone drill 7.10 s
20-yard shuttle 4.12 s (4.14 s in the combine table on Wikipedia)

For a man of 192 cm and 266 lb, a 4.12-second short shuttle is exceptional. That drill measures how quickly a player can change direction, and it is exactly the skill an edge rusher needs to bend around an offensive tackle. CBS's scouting summary highlighted his explosive first step off the snap and what it called his "insane physical strength." Those traits, more than his height, are what made him the second overall pick.

Height in the context of the edge-rusher position

Edge rushers are the defenders who line up outside the offensive tackles and attack the quarterback. Among the pass rushers in the table below, Bosa's 193 cm sits in the middle, level with Myles Garrett and a few centimeters below Reggie White and J. J. Watt.

Arm length matters more than height

Scouts care at least as much about arm length as about height, because long arms let a rusher strike a blocker first and keep him away from the body. A 2026 PFF analysis of pass-rush data over three NFL seasons found that edge defenders with arms shorter than 31 inches had by far the lowest pressure rate (11.7 percent), while those in the 31-to-34-inch range performed best. Interestingly, very long arms did not help further: players with 35-inch-plus arms had a lower pressure rate (12.2 percent) than the middle groups.

Bosa's 33-inch arms sit right in that productive band. His brother Joey's 33⅜-inch arms are almost identical. Myles Garrett, whose arms PFF lists at 35¼ inches, is the outlier at the long end, and he too has been one of the league's most productive rushers, showing that the numbers describe tendencies rather than rules.

Bosa next to other pass rushers and teammates

Player Position Height (site data) Difference from Bosa
Reggie White DE (Hall of Fame) 196 cm +3 cm
J. J. Watt DE 196 cm +3 cm
Nick Bosa DE 193 cm —
Myles Garrett DE 193 cm 0 cm
Lawrence Taylor OLB (Hall of Fame) 191 cm −2 cm
Ray Lewis LB (Hall of Fame) 185 cm −8 cm
Brock Purdy 49ers QB 185 cm −8 cm
Christian McCaffrey 49ers RB 183 cm −10 cm

Bosa is the same height as Garrett and slightly shorter than Reggie White and J. J. Watt, two of the most decorated defensive ends in history. He is two centimeters taller than Lawrence Taylor, often considered the greatest pass rusher ever. Among 49ers teammates, he stands about eight centimeters taller than quarterback Brock Purdy and ten above running back Christian McCaffrey.

A family built for defense

Few families have produced as much defensive-line talent as the Bosas. According to the 49ers' media guide, Nick's father, John Bosa, was taken 16th overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 1987 draft, and a year later Miami used the 16th pick again on Eric Kumerow, who became Nick's uncle. His older brother Joey Bosa went third overall to the Chargers in 2016. Growing up, the media guide notes, Joey's family nickname was "Big Bear" and Nick's "Smaller Bear," and the measurements show why.

Brother Combine height Listed size Arm length 40-yard dash
Joey Bosa (2016) 6′5¼″ (196.2 cm), 269 lb 6′5″ 33⅜ in 4.77 s
Nick Bosa (2019) 6′3¾″ (192.4 cm), 266 lb 6′4″, 266 lb 33 in 4.79 s

Joey measured about 3.8 cm taller and 3 lb heavier at their respective combines, and the two brothers ran virtually identical 40-yard dashes and have almost the same arm length. Both played at Ohio State, and the media guide notes that both won the Big Ten's Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year award, Joey in 2014 and 2015 and Nick in 2017. Taken together, the family includes a first-round father, a first-round uncle and two sons drafted in the top three, an unusual concentration of defensive-line talent in one extended family.

From Fort Lauderdale to Ohio State

Bosa grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the hometown NFL.com lists for him. The 49ers' media guide recounts that John Bosa encouraged both sons to try tennis, golf and baseball, but that Nick had only ever wanted to play football and made his feelings clear.

He followed Joey to Ohio State, where his size was already close to what it is today. CBS Sports' draft profile summarizes his college production:

Season Games Sacks Tackles for loss
2016 (true freshman) 12 5.0 7
2017 (sophomore) 14 8.5 15
2018 (junior) 3 — —

In 2018 he played three games before a core muscle injury required surgery, and he chose to sit out the rest of the season to prepare for the draft. Despite the short final year, Wikipedia notes that a majority of analysts and scouts projected him as the first overall pick.

The 2019 draft: size at the top of the board

The 2019 draft offered a vivid lesson in how differently teams value height by position. The first overall pick, quarterback Kyler Murray, is listed in the site's data at 178 cm, about 15 cm shorter than Bosa, who went second to San Francisco. Their paths crossed again on 21 September 2025: ESPN's report on Bosa's season-ending knee injury says he was rushing Murray when he went down against the Arizona Cardinals.

How his size has translated into production

Bosa's results in San Francisco have been elite from the start. The 49ers' 2025 media guide lists his major achievements:

Season Highlight
2019 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year; 9.0 sacks, fourth-most by a 49ers rookie since 1982; Pro Bowl
2021 15.5 sacks; Pro Bowl; Bill Walsh Award
2022 AP Defensive Player of the Year; NFL-leading 18.5 sacks; first-team All-Pro
2023 Pro Bowl
2024 Pro Bowl
Through 2024 62.5 career sacks, third in 49ers history behind Bryant Young and Charles Haley

His 2022 season is the clearest example of a 6′4″ edge rusher at his peak: he led the league with 18.5 sacks and was named AP Defensive Player of the Year. In September 2023, after a 43-day holdout, he signed a five-year, $170 million extension with $122.5 million guaranteed; ESPN reported that its $34 million average made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history at the time.

His career has also been interrupted by knee injuries: Wikipedia records a torn ACL in September 2020, and ESPN reported a second, a clean tear in his right knee, on 21 September 2025 that ended that season. Wikipedia's career statistics show him back on the field in 2026.

Weight and build: what 266 pounds looks like at 6′4″

At 193 cm and 120.7 kg, Bosa's body mass index works out to about 32.4, which on a standard BMI chart falls in the "obese" range. That number is a good example of why BMI is a poor tool for elite athletes. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, and a defensive end carries an enormous amount of muscle in the legs, hips, back and shoulders to drive 300-pound offensive linemen backward. The body visualizer lets you see how the same height and weight can describe very different body shapes.

For comparison, the site lists Travis Kelce at 195.6 cm and 113.4 kg, and J. J. Watt at 196 cm and 133.8 kg. Bosa sits between them in weight while being a little shorter than both.

How 6′4″ compares with American men

Bosa is far taller than the typical American man. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration estimates that U.S. men born in 1996, the cohort closest to his 1997 birth year, average 177.1 cm, so he is about 16 cm, or more than six inches, taller. The long-term trend is on the United States average height page.

In the CDC's NHANES measurements for August 2021 to August 2023, the 95th percentile for American men aged 20 to 29 is 188.1 cm. At 193 cm, Bosa is nearly 5 cm above that line, well inside the tallest 5 percent of American men his age. The height percentile calculator shows exactly how rare any height is.

Group Average or percentile Bosa's margin
U.S. men born 1996, average (NCD-RisC) 177.1 cm +15.9 cm
U.S. men 20–29, median (NHANES) 176.1 cm +16.9 cm
U.S. men 20–29, 95th percentile (NHANES) 188.1 cm +4.9 cm
All American football players in the site's data, average 190.4 cm +2.6 cm

The last line matters. Among the 283 American football players in the site's database, the average height is 190.4 cm, so even in a sport full of big men Bosa is slightly taller than the norm.

Bosa next to famous people outside football

To put 193 cm in everyday terms, Bosa is the same height as Tom Brady and Steve Young in the site's data, and a couple of centimeters taller than Donald Trump (190.5 cm). He is about 2.6 cm shorter than Dwayne Johnson and 13 cm shorter than LeBron James.

To see how you would stand next to him, enter 193 cm into the height difference calculator. A 5′10″ man (178 cm) would be 15 cm shorter; a woman of average American height (161.2 cm in NHANES) would be about 32 cm shorter.
