Real people the same height as Han Solo

Han Solo's official height: 1.8 meters

The official StarWars.com Databank gives Han Solo's height as 180 cm (5′11″), and Wookieepedia uses the Databank as its source for that figure. Lucasfilm's licensed reference Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Head-to-Head adds a mass of 80 kg (about 176 lb). Those two numbers describe a fit, ordinary-sized man: a little taller than average, nowhere near the extremes that some of his companions reach.

That ordinariness is worth stressing, because Han often looks bigger in the films than his listing suggests. He is the swaggering one, the man with the blaster slung low and the ship that made the Kessel Run, and his confidence fills the frame. Physically, though, the canon puts him at an unremarkable 5′11″, almost exactly the height of a typical tall-ish man in the United States today.

There is no serious dispute over this figure in current canon. The 1.8-meter listing applies to Han throughout his adult life, from the young pilot of Solo: A Star Wars Story to the gray-haired smuggler of The Force Awakens.

Han's life in numbers

Star Wars: Timelines places Han's birth in 32 BBY on Corellia and his death in 34 ABY, aboard Starkiller Base. That gives him a lifespan of about 66 years and one of the longest on-screen arcs of any character in the saga.

Moment In-universe year Han's age Film or series
Escapes Corellia, meets Chewbacca on Mimban about 13 BBY about 19 Solo: A Star Wars Story
Meets Luke and Obi-Wan in Mos Eisley 0 BBY about 32 A New Hope
Frozen in carbonite on Cloud City 3 ABY about 35 The Empire Strikes Back
Leads the strike team on Endor 4 ABY about 36 Return of the Jedi
Killed by Kylo Ren on Starkiller Base 34 ABY about 66 The Force Awakens

The Databank's summary of his early life fills in the gaps: a teenage thief with the White Worms gang on Corellia, a short spell at the Imperial Academy that ended in expulsion, service as a mudtrooper on Mimban, where he met Chewbacca, and the sabacc game in which he won the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian. None of these stages comes with a separate height in the reference books, and because Han is already an adult in Solo, the 1.8-meter figure applies to every version of him we see.

Harrison Ford, Alden Ehrenreich and the shape of the role

George Lucas's early drafts made Han an alien and later a bearded pirate before the character settled into what Wikipedia's account of his creation calls a "tough James Dean style starpilot." Lucas had worked with Harrison Ford on American Graffiti and at first resisted casting him, preferring unknown actors. Ford ended up reading lines with other actors during auditions, and Lucas was eventually won over. Actors reportedly considered for the role included John Travolta, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, Al Pacino and Bill Murray.

Ford is generally listed at around 185 cm (6′1″), which is the figure in this site's people database. The character's official height is therefore about 5 cm shorter than the man who made him famous. That kind of gap is common for fictional heights, which are set by reference-book writers and do not have to match the actor. In Han's case it has a useful side effect: Ford towers comfortably over Carrie Fisher, whose listed height of 155 cm matches Leia's official figure exactly, while staying well below Peter Mayhew's Chewbacca.

Alden Ehrenreich took over the role for Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), playing Han as a 19-year-old orphan who joins the Imperial Navy after he is separated from Qi'ra on Corellia. Lucasfilm did not issue a separate height for the younger Han, so the Databank's 1.8 m remains the canonical number for both actors' versions of the character.

Han Solo compared with the Star Wars cast

Han spends much of the saga standing next to characters who are either much taller or much shorter than he is. This table uses the canonical heights in our Star Wars character database.

Yoda 66 cm (2′2″) 114 cm shorter

Han and Chewbacca

The partnership between Han and Chewbacca is one of the most recognizable height pairings in film. At 2.28 m, Chewie stands 48 cm above his captain, so Han's eye level sits roughly at the Wookiee's chest. The Falcon's cockpit is staged so the two can sit side by side, but whenever they are on their feet together the difference is obvious. The gap is larger than the one between an average man and a professional basketball center.

Han and Leia

The romance between Han and Leia spans a 25 cm height difference, and real-world couples research lets us put that in context. A 2013 study by Gert Stulp and colleagues, published in PLOS ONE, analyzed 12,502 couples from the UK Millennium Cohort Study. The average man in those couples was 14.1 cm taller than his partner, and the man was taller in 92.5% of pairs. Couples in which the man was at least 25 cm taller made up 13.9% of the sample, slightly fewer than the 15.7% that random pairing would predict. Han and Leia therefore sit right at that threshold: an unusual gap, but one shared by roughly one couple in seven. The authors concluded that preferences for a particular height difference shape real pairings only modestly. The famous carbonite scene in The Empire Strikes Back plays on that gap, with Leia looking up at Han for one of the saga's best-known exchanges.

Han and Luke

Against Luke Skywalker, Han's advantage is a modest 8 cm. In A New Hope the two often swap the roles of reckless pilot and earnest farm boy, and Han's slightly larger frame and easy posture help sell him as the more worldly of the pair. In Return of the Jedi, when they reunite in Jabba's palace, the height difference is barely noticeable because Han is still recovering from hibernation sickness.

Han and his son

Ben Solo, who becomes Kylo Ren, is listed at 1.89 m, so the son grows 9 cm taller than his father. Their final scene together on the bridge at Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens stages that difference deliberately: Han reaches up to touch his son's face before Kylo strikes. Ben's height is closer to that of his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker, who is listed at 1.88 m out of armor.

Han and the bounty hunters

Boba Fett, the hunter who delivers the frozen Han to Jabba the Hutt, is listed at 1.83 m, only 3 cm taller. Din Djarin, the Mandalorian of the later series, shares Han's exact height of 1.8 m. Of all the major human characters, Han is closest in size to these armored gunslingers, which suits a character who lives on the same side of the law.

Han beside the Falcon's crew and the Rebel leadership

Han's height also places him neatly among the wider cast of the original trilogy. He is the same listed height as Din Djarin, essentially level with Obi-Wan Kenobi (1.81 m), and 3 cm taller than C-3PO (1.77 m), the protocol droid who spends much of The Empire Strikes Back complaining from the Falcon's hold or strapped to Chewbacca's back. R2-D2, at 1.08 m, reaches roughly to Han's waist. In the hangar scenes on Yavin 4 and Hoth, where pilots, droids and officers mix, Han reads as an average-to-tall human in a crowd of average humans, which is precisely what the 1.8-meter listing describes.

On board the Millennium Falcon, the same pattern holds. The cockpit seats Han and Chewbacca side by side, the gunnery wells hold Han and Luke during the escape from the Death Star, and the lounge where Chewbacca plays dejarik with R2-D2 puts the full range of the crew's sizes in a single frame, from a 1.08-meter droid to a 2.28-meter Wookiee, with Han in the middle at 1.8 meters.

Frozen at 5′11″: the carbonite slab

The carbonite block in The Empire Strikes Back is the one time Han's body is literally put on display. Boba Fett hauls the slab to his ship, and it later hangs as a trophy on the wall of Jabba's palace. Because Han is frozen in a defensive pose with his hands raised, the slab is taller and wider than he is. Leia's rescue at the start of Return of the Jedi begins with the block, and the scene works because the slab is plainly the size of a full-grown man. For fans building replicas, the 1.8-meter height is the practical starting point, since the carbonite is designed to hold a man of that size with room to spare.

Does Han's height matter in the story?

Lucasfilm has never explained why Han is listed at 1.8 m, and nothing in the films turns on his exact size. Still, his height works neatly within the trio. He is taller than Luke and Leia, giving him a physical edge that matches his role as the experienced older hand. He is far shorter than Chewbacca and Vader, so he never becomes the most imposing presence in a scene. The result is a hero whose power comes from nerve and luck, not bulk. When he fights, he wins with a blaster or a bluff, and when he is beaten, as on Cloud City, it is by a 2.03-meter Sith Lord who stands 23 cm above him.

What 5′11″ means in the real world

At 180 cm, Han is a little above average for an adult man. NCD-RisC estimates that men born in 1996 in the United States average about 177 cm, so Han is roughly 3 cm (an inch) taller than the typical American man of that generation. In the United Kingdom, where the comparable average is about 177.5 cm, he would also be slightly above average. You can compare those benchmarks on the average height by country pages.

For exact conversions, see the 180 cm to feet page, which explains why 180 cm rounds to 5′11″ (it is 5′10.9″ precisely), and the 5′11″ in centimeters page for the reverse calculation. To put Han beside yourself, Leia or Chewbacca at true scale, use the height comparison tool.

Why some sites list Han at 6′1″

The most common alternative figure online is 6′1″, which is Harrison Ford's own reported height rather than the character's. Older Legends material also offered a range of numbers before the 2014 canon reset. The StarWars.com Databank, Lucasfilm's own reference, lists Han at 1.8 m, and that is the figure we use for every comparison on this site. Ford's height is useful context for how the original films were staged, but it is not Han's canonical height.
