Real people the same height as Grogu
Grogu's official height: 34 centimeters
Grogu, the foundling at the heart of The Mandalorian, is listed at 34 cm (1′1″). That is the figure on the official StarWars.com Databank, and Wookieepedia cites the licensed reference Star Wars: Character Encyclopedia, Updated and Expanded Edition as the book that gives it. At a little over a foot tall, he is one of the smallest named characters in the saga, smaller than R2-D2 and roughly half the height of his famous species-mate Yoda.
The 34-centimeter figure describes Grogu as he appears in his live-action stories: The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and the 2026 feature film The Mandalorian and Grogu. Lucasfilm has not published a different height for any of these appearances, and the character has not visibly grown during the roughly six in-universe years that the series covers.
Fifty years old and still a toddler
The most surprising thing about Grogu's size is his age. In the very first episode of The Mandalorian, a character states that the child is 50 years old. Star Wars: Timelines places that episode in 9 ABY, so Wookieepedia calculates that Grogu was born around 41 BBY, the same year as Anakin Skywalker. Yet he behaves like a human toddler, waddles rather than walks, and communicates in coos and gestures.
Yoda's species, whose name has never been revealed in canon, is extremely long-lived. Yoda himself was about 900 years old when he died on Dagobah. A 50-year-old member of that species is therefore developmentally very young, and the 34-centimeter height reflects that. Grogu's small size is not a sign of a different species or a special condition; it is simply what a child of his kind looks like at that stage of a very slow life.
| Event | In-universe year | Grogu's age | Where it happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Born | about 41 BBY | 0 | Not shown |
| Raised at the Jedi Temple | Clone Wars era (22–19 BBY) | about 19–22 | Revealed in "Chapter 13: The Jedi" |
| Survives Order 66 | 19 BBY | about 22 | Flashback in "Chapter 20: The Foundling" |
| Found by Din Djarin on Arvala-7 | 9 ABY | 50 | "Chapter 1: The Mandalorian" |
| Taken by Luke Skywalker | about 9 ABY | about 50 | "Chapter 16: The Rescue" |
| Returns to Din and is adopted as Din Grogu | about 9–10 ABY | about 50–51 | The Book of Boba Fett; "Chapter 24: The Return" |
The StarWars.com Databank summarizes his background: a Force-sensitive student at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant who survived Order 66 and was hidden away, then rescued from an Imperial remnant compound by the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin after the founding of the New Republic.
Grogu compared with Yoda and the Star Wars cast
Grogu's tiny height is clearest when you put him next to the characters he travels with. The table uses canonical heights from this site's Star Wars character database.

Grogu and Yoda
The comparison everyone wants is with Yoda, who is listed at 66 cm. Yoda stands 32 cm taller, almost exactly twice Grogu's height. The two share the same green skin, large ears and wide eyes, which is why fans nicknamed Grogu "Baby Yoda" within days of his debut. They are different individuals, and the 32-centimeter gap is a good visual reminder that Grogu is a child of the species while Yoda was a centuries-old elder.
Grogu and the Mandalorian
Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, is listed at 1.8 m, which makes him about 5.3 times Grogu's height. That difference drives a great deal of the show's staging. Grogu travels in a hovering pram, rides in a satchel or sits on Din's shoulder, because on foot he would struggle to keep up. Scenes of the armored warrior kneeling to bring his face level with the child are among the series' most memorable images, and they work because of the extreme size contrast.
Grogu and Luke Skywalker
When Luke Skywalker arrives at the end of the second season to take Grogu for Jedi training, the 1.72-meter Jedi Master is about five times the child's height. Luke's own teacher, Yoda, was a member of Grogu's species, so the moment closes a loop: the student who once carried a 66-centimeter master on his back now carries a 34-centimeter apprentice in his arms.
How the puppet shaped Grogu's size
Grogu's height is not only a number in a reference book; it was built into a physical object. According to Wikipedia's account of the character's creation, showrunner Jon Favreau conceived Grogu to explore the mystery of Yoda's species, and Dave Filoni sketched an early version on cocktail napkins. Concept artist Christian Alzmann's drawing of the child in his makeshift robe became the definitive look.
The puppet itself was designed and operated by Legacy Effects. Actor Adam Pally has said Favreau told him it cost about $5 million. Two technicians control the figure: one handles the eyes and mouth, while the other operates other facial expressions. Several stand-in versions were made for different kinds of shots, and CGI is used to enhance the puppet rather than replace it. Some scenes were also shot without the puppet so it could be added digitally if needed.
Building a practical puppet imposes a real-world scale on the character. A figure of roughly a foot tall has to fit animatronic mechanisms into its head and still look natural cradled in an adult actor's arms or sitting in a prop pram. The 34-centimeter canonical height matches that physical reality, which is one reason Grogu looks so convincingly present in scenes with live actors.
Grogu was also kept out of prerelease marketing and merchandise plans before the show debuted, to avoid spoiling the reveal. When he appeared at the end of the first episode, the surprise was a major part of the show's early success.
Grogu on the big screen
The Mandalorian and Grogu, released in May 2026, is the first theatrical film built around the pair. Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced it on the company's earnings call in early 2024. The move to cinema screens did not change Grogu's canonical size: the Databank still lists him at 0.34 m, and the film keeps the visual language of the series, with Din Djarin's armored 1.8-meter frame looming over a child who stands below his knee.
The jump in screen size does change how that height reads. On a television, Grogu's 34 centimeters fill a small part of a small frame; on a cinema screen, close-ups of the puppet's face can be several meters across. The filmmakers' approach of keeping the camera low, often at Grogu's eye level, means audiences experience the galaxy from roughly a foot off the ground, a perspective that makes the adult characters, the droids and the creatures around him feel enormous.
The conversion is worth spelling out, because many charts round Grogu's height carelessly. Thirty-four centimeters divided by 2.54 gives 13.39 inches, which is 1 foot 1.4 inches. Some sites round that to "about 1 foot," which understates him by more than an inch, while others quote 14 inches, which overstates him. On this site the stored value is exactly 34 cm, and every comparison, ratio and conversion is calculated from that figure.
A name revealed: from "the Child" to Din Grogu
For the first season and a half, subtitles and official materials called him only "the Child." His real name was revealed in "Chapter 13: The Jedi," in which Ahsoka Tano communicates with him and learns that he was raised at the Jedi Temple during the Clone Wars. At the end of "Chapter 24: The Return," he is formally adopted and given the name Din Grogu. The fan nickname "Baby Yoda" stuck despite all of this. Wikipedia notes that the crew does not use it internally, and that Disney CEO Bob Iger has said Favreau scolded him for using it in emails.
What 34 cm means in the real world
It is hard to overstate how small 34 cm is. A standard school ruler is 30 cm long, so Grogu stands only a few centimeters taller than one. In human terms, he is smaller than a newborn baby. The World Health Organization's Child Growth Standards give a median length of 49.9 cm for a newborn boy, and even the third standard deviation below the median is 44.2 cm. Grogu is around 16 cm shorter than the typical newborn.
The comparison with toddlers, whom Grogu resembles in behavior, is even more striking. The CDC's 2000 growth charts put the median height of a two-year-old American boy at about 86 cm, so a human toddler of the age Grogu acts would stand roughly two and a half times his height. If you want to see Grogu next to a child, an adult or Yoda at true scale, the height comparison tool supports heights down to a few centimeters, and the height converter will translate 34 cm into feet and inches (13.4 inches) or any other unit.
Why some sites list other heights
Before the Databank and the Character Encyclopedia published the 0.34-meter figure, fan sites estimated Grogu's height from the puppet, and you may still see guesses of 40 cm or more. Those estimates often include his ears, which stick out sideways rather than up, or are taken from merchandise rather than from the screen character. Plush toys and collectible figures are made in many sizes and are not a guide to canon.
The current canonical figure is 34 cm, from Lucasfilm's own reference material. It also makes good sense against the rest of the cast: half of Yoda, a fifth of Luke, and a little over a foot of determined, Force-wielding foundling.
Grogu's size in the story
Size is central to almost every Grogu storyline. He is constantly underestimated, picked up, carried off or placed in danger because he is so small, and the show repeatedly undercuts that with displays of Force power far beyond his size: lifting a mudhorn in the first season, stopping flamethrower fire, and briefly Force-choking Cara Dune when he mistakes an arm-wrestling match for a real fight. The contrast between the 34-centimeter body and the strength of the Force echoes Yoda's teaching to Luke on Dagobah that physical size is not what matters for a Jedi. Grogu is the clearest illustration of that idea in the modern era of Star Wars.
It also explains why so many of the series' scenes feature adults stooping, kneeling or reaching down. A child who stands roughly level with an adult's knee changes how every scene is framed, and the filmmakers lean into it with low camera angles that put the audience at Grogu's eye level as the armored world towers around him.
