Real people the same height as Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker's official height: 1.72 meters

Lucasfilm lists Luke Skywalker at 172 cm (5′8″). The figure appears on the official StarWars.com Databank, and Wookieepedia cites Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary as the licensed book that states it. The same encyclopedia entry records his mass as 73 kg (about 161 lb), a figure taken from Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Head-to-Head. Together those numbers describe a compact, lean man rather than the towering hero type that dominates many action franchises.

Unlike some characters, Luke has a single canonical adult height. There is no "armored" version to complicate things and no notable disagreement between current canon sources. The 1.72-meter figure covers him from the farm boy of A New Hope through the exiled Jedi Master of The Last Jedi, and it is the number this site uses for every comparison.

Luke's height through the saga

Luke's story spans more than half a century of in-universe time. According to Star Wars: Timelines, he was born in 19 BBY on Polis Massa and died on Ahch-To in 34 ABY. Reference material does not give a separate height for each stage of his adult life, but the timeline helps place the figure.

Appearance In-universe year Luke's age Notes on height
Revenge of the Sith (infant) 19 BBY Newborn Played by Aidan Barton as both twins
Obi-Wan Kenobi (series) 9 BBY About 10 Played by Grant Feely; no official height given
A New Hope 0 BBY 19 Adult height of 1.72 m applies from here
The Empire Strikes Back 3 ABY 22 1.72 m
Return of the Jedi 4 ABY 23 1.72 m
The Mandalorian / The Book of Boba Fett 9 ABY 28 1.72 m
The Last Jedi 34 ABY 53 1.72 m

The child version of Luke appears only briefly in Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Lucasfilm has not published a height for him at that age. Once he reaches adulthood in A New Hope, he stays at 1.72 m in every licensed reference.

Mark Hamill and the making of Luke

Luke was created by George Lucas, whose early drafts gave the hero the surname "Starkiller" before it was changed to Skywalker. Wikipedia's account of the character's development notes that Lucas considered very different protagonists along the way, including an older war hero and a woman, before settling on a young farm boy. The character first appeared in print in the 1976 novelization Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, ahead of the 1977 film.

Mark Hamill won the part over other young actors who auditioned, including Robby Benson, William Katt, Kurt Russell and Charles Martin Smith. He played Luke in all three films of the original trilogy and returned for The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, as well as the season two finale of The Mandalorian and an episode of The Book of Boba Fett. Hamill has never been marketed as a tall leading man, and the official 1.72-meter figure is broadly in line with how he appears beside his co-stars. That consistency between actor and character is part of why Luke's height has never been controversial in the way some fictional heights are.

Before The Empire Strikes Back, Hamill was injured in a car accident in January 1977 that fractured his nose and cheekbone. Lucas accounted for the change in his appearance by having Luke injured early in The Empire Strikes Back, after years of fighting for the Rebellion. The accident changed Luke's face, not his stature, and his listed height stayed the same.

Luke's costumes also do little to change how tall he looks, which is one reason his on-screen size matches the official number so closely. His Tatooine tunic, the orange flight suit of the Yavin assault and the black Jedi outfit of Return of the Jedi are all built around flat boots and no headgear beyond a pilot's helmet. Compare that with his father, whose helmet and armored boots add about 15 cm to Anakin's listed height, or with the stormtrooper disguise Luke borrows on the Death Star, which is designed for a fully armored soldier. What you see of Luke on screen is essentially a 1.72-meter man in everyday clothes.

Luke compared with the Star Wars cast

Most of Luke's closest companions are taller than he is, which is a big reason the character reads as the underdog. Here is how he compares with the main Star Wars cast using this site's canonical heights.

Character Height Difference from Luke (172 cm)
Chewbacca 228 cm (7′6″) 56 cm taller
Darth Vader (armored) 203 cm (6′8″) 31 cm taller
Kylo Ren 189 cm (6′2″) 17 cm taller
Obi-Wan Kenobi 181 cm (5′11″) 9 cm taller
Han Solo 180 cm (5′11″) 8 cm taller
C-3PO 177 cm (5′10″) 5 cm taller
Rey 170 cm (5′7″) 2 cm shorter
Leia Organa 155 cm (5′1″) 17 cm shorter
R2-D2 108 cm (3′7″) 64 cm shorter
Yoda 66 cm (2′2″) 106 cm shorter
Grogu 34 cm (1′1″) 138 cm shorter

Luke and his father

The duel on Cloud City puts Luke against Darth Vader, who is listed at 2.03 m in his armor. That is a 31 cm gap, and it shapes the staging of the fight: Vader is constantly shown above Luke on gantries and stairs. Anakin out of armor is listed at 1.88 m, so even the unmasked father would still stand 16 cm taller than his son. Luke inherited many things from Anakin, but not his height.

Luke, Han and Leia

Han Solo is listed at 1.8 m, so in the trio's scenes together Han stands about 8 cm taller than Luke, while Leia, at 1.55 m, is 17 cm shorter than her twin. In the Death Star cell scene of A New Hope, Leia greets her rescuer with the line "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" It is a joke about the stolen armor, but it has helped cement the popular idea that Luke is small. Against the official numbers, he is shorter than Han and Chewbacca, taller than Leia, and close to the height of an ordinary stormtrooper actor.

Luke as a teacher

Luke's two most important students make an interesting pair. Grogu, whom he takes from Moff Gideon's cruiser in The Mandalorian, is listed at 0.34 m, which makes Luke about five times his height. Rey, whom he reluctantly trains on Ahch-To, is listed at 1.70 m, almost exactly his size. His own master Yoda is 66 cm, so Luke spent his own training on Dagobah carrying a teacher who stood less than half his height on his back.

The Skywalker family tree, measured

Because Lucasfilm publishes heights for almost every member of Luke's family, the Skywalkers make a neat case study in how height runs in families, even fictional ones. The figures below are the canonical values in this site's database.

Family member Relationship to Luke Height
Anakin Skywalker (unarmored) Father 188 cm (6′2″)
Padmé Amidala Mother 165 cm (5′5″)
Leia Organa Twin sister 155 cm (5′1″)
Han Solo Brother-in-law 180 cm (5′11″)
Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) Nephew 189 cm (6′2″)

Pediatricians often estimate a child's adult "target height" with the mid-parental method published by Tanner, Goldstein and Whitehouse in 1970: for a boy, add the parents' heights, add 13 cm and halve the result; for a girl, subtract 13 cm instead. The range of about 8.5 cm either side covers most healthy children. Applied playfully to the Skywalkers, Anakin and Padmé would predict a son of about 183 cm (range roughly 174.5–191.5 cm) and a daughter of about 170 cm. Luke, at 172 cm, lands just below his predicted range, and Leia, at 155 cm, well below hers. Ben Solo goes the other way: Han and Leia predict a son of about 174 cm, yet Kylo Ren is listed at 189 cm, taller than either of his parents and almost exactly the height of his grandfather Anakin.

None of this is canon, and fictional characters are cast and costumed rather than born. It is still a fun way to see that the saga's heights are not random: the tall line runs from Anakin to Ben, while the twins ended up on the shorter side. If you want to try the same method on a real family, the height predictor uses Tanner's formula along with other published methods and explains their limits.

Does Luke's height matter in the story?

Lucas and later filmmakers have never published a statement explaining why Luke was given a modest height, so it is better to look at what the films do with it. Luke is consistently framed as an ordinary young man thrust into an extraordinary situation. He is surrounded by bigger, louder personalities: a 7-foot Wookiee, a swaggering smuggler, a 6′8″ Sith Lord. His average build supports the idea that the Force, not physical size, is the source of a Jedi's strength, a point Yoda makes explicitly on Dagobah when he tells Luke that size does not matter.

The sequel trilogy flips the dynamic. The older Luke of The Last Jedi is a withdrawn figure on a remote island, and his height is unremarkable next to Rey. When he confronts Kylo Ren on Crait, the taller nephew (1.89 m) faces a smaller, calmer master, and the scene again uses size as a misdirection: the physically imposing fighter is the one who is outmatched.

What 5′8″ means in the real world

At 172 cm, Luke is a realistic, everyday height for a man. NCD-RisC estimates that men born in 1996 in the United States average about 177 cm, so Luke stands roughly 5 cm (2 inches) below the typical American man of a recent generation. In the United Kingdom, the comparable average is about 177.5 cm. In Japan, where men born in 1996 average around 170.8 cm, Luke would be slightly taller than average. You can explore those benchmarks on the average height by country pages.

To put 172 cm in context, the main comparison tool lets you line Luke up beside yourself, Han and Vader at true scale. A man of Luke's height would not stand out in a crowd, which is exactly the point of the character: a farm boy who becomes a Jedi Knight without looking like a superhero.

Why some sites list Luke at other heights

Unofficial height charts sometimes give Luke as 5′7″ or 5′9″. Those numbers usually come from estimates of Mark Hamill's own height rather than from Lucasfilm's reference material. Older Expanded Universe books, now branded Legends, also occasionally gave different figures. The current canonical number on StarWars.com and in The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary is 1.72 m, and that is the figure we use for every comparison on this site.

Frequently asked questions

Is Luke Skywalker short?

Not really. At 1.72 m (5 ft 8 in) he is a little below the average for a man born in the United States in the 1990s, but within the normal range. He only looks small because he spends so much screen time next to Han Solo, Chewbacca and Darth Vader.

Why does Leia call Luke 'a little short for a stormtrooper'?

In A New Hope, Luke bursts into Leia's Death Star cell wearing a stolen stormtrooper uniform, and she teases him about his size. It is a joke about the disguise rather than an official statement about his height, which reference books give as 1.72 m.

How much taller is Luke than his twin sister Leia?

Using the official figures, Luke at 1.72 m stands 17 cm (about 7 inches) taller than Leia Organa, who is listed at 1.55 m.
