How tall is Rihanna?

The site lists Rihanna at 173 cm (5′8″), the height recorded on her Wikidata entry and the figure most consistently given for her in entertainment coverage. As with every musician, there is no league roster or standardized public measurement behind it; it is a published listing. It does, however, match the way she appears next to people of well-documented height, including her frequent collaborator Drake and her Ocean's 8 co-stars.

At 5′8″, Rihanna is tall for a woman by almost any national standard, and she is taller than many of the pop stars she is most often compared with. That is less obvious than it might be, because a large share of her public images come from fashion events and performances where everyone is wearing heels.

Source Figure Notes
Wikidata 173 cm The site's canonical value
Common entertainment listings 5′8″ Consistent with the canonical value
Fan estimates 5′7″ to 5′8½″ Usually based on photos in heels

The metric and imperial figures line up closely here: 173 cm converts to 5 feet 8.1 inches, so the two systems round to the same answer, which is one reason her height is rarely disputed.

From Saint Michael, Barbados, to global stardom

Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born on February 20, 1988, in Saint Michael, Barbados, and grew up in Bridgetown. Her Wikipedia biography recounts that in 2003 she formed a trio with two classmates that auditioned for the American producer Evan Rogers, who later said that the moment Rihanna walked into the room, the other two girls seemed to disappear. Rogers helped her record a demo, and she signed with Def Jam and released her debut album, Music of the Sun, in 2005.

She was 15 at that audition and 17 when her first album came out. Girls typically reach close to their adult height around two years after their first period, often by about 15 or 16, so unlike some male stars who grew noticeably in their early music videos, Rihanna appears at essentially her adult height from her first releases. Early clips such as the "Pon de Replay" video show a performer who already looks tall next to her dancers, which is consistent with the 173 cm figure used today.

Over the next decade she produced a string of hits, from "Umbrella" and "Only Girl (In the World)" to "We Found Love," "Diamonds" and "Work." She has won nine Grammy Awards, became a billionaire largely through her businesses, including Fenty Beauty and the Savage X Fenty lingerie brand, and was named a National Hero of Barbados in 2021, after serving as an ambassador for the country from 2018.

In February 2023 she headlined the Super Bowl LVII halftime show. According to the event's Wikipedia page, the performance drew more than 121 million viewers across television and digital platforms, overtaking Katy Perry's 2015 show as the most-watched halftime show in US television history at the time.

Super Bowl headliners by height

The halftime show is the biggest single stage in American music, and several women have headlined it in the past decade and a half. Using the site's data, Rihanna is the tallest of this group:

Headliner Super Bowl Height (site data) Difference from Rihanna
Rihanna LVII (2023) 173 cm —
Katy Perry XLIX (2015) 171 cm −2 cm
Beyoncé XLVII (2013) 170.2 cm −2.8 cm
Jennifer Lopez LIV (2020, co-headliner) 163.8 cm −9.2 cm
Shakira LIV (2020, co-headliner) 157 cm −16 cm
Lady Gaga LI (2017) 155 cm −18 cm

The 18 cm spread between Rihanna and Lady Gaga shows that the role does not call for any particular physique. In a stadium of around 70,000 people, with a global TV audience, height is overwhelmed by staging, lighting and camera work. What the table does show is that Rihanna, in addition to drawing the largest audience of the group according to the viewership figures for her show, was also the tallest headliner of the lot.

Height and fashion

Rihanna's career has been closely tied to fashion, both as a style icon and as the founder of a luxury fashion house under LVMH and of the Savage X Fenty lingerie line. In fashion, height is a practical matter: sample sizes, runway casting and garment proportions are all designed around particular body lengths.

At 173 cm, Rihanna is shorter than most runway models, many of whom are around 175 to 180 cm, but taller than the majority of women in nearly every country. Models in the site's data illustrate the range: Brooklyn Decker, her Battleship co-star, is listed at 175 cm and Cara Delevingne, her Valerian co-star, at 176 cm, both just a few centimeters taller than Rihanna.

Her own brands have made inclusivity part of their identity, with ranges and runway shows deliberately featuring models of many heights and sizes. That positioning sits comfortably with her own figure: tall enough to wear high fashion convincingly, but not unusually tall by model standards.

Heels and apparent height

Like most stars, Rihanna is typically photographed in heels, often 10 cm or more. That turns her 173 cm into something closer to 183 cm on a red carpet, taller than the average man in most countries.

Footwear Approximate added height Apparent height
Barefoot 0 cm 173 cm (5′8″)
Sneakers or flats 2–3 cm about 176 cm (5′9″)
Mid-height heel 6–8 cm about 180 cm (5′11″)
High stiletto or platform 10–14 cm about 183–187 cm (6′0″–6′1½″)

When she stands next to male collaborators of average height in those photos, she can look the same height or taller, even though barefoot she is several centimeters shorter than the average man.

Rihanna next to her collaborators

Rihanna has worked with many of the biggest names in music, and the table uses the site's data.

Artist Collaboration Height (site data) Difference
Drake "What's My Name?", "Work" 182.9 cm Drake +9.9 cm
Kanye West "All of the Lights," "FourFiveSeconds" 172.7 cm About equal
Beyoncé Fellow pop superstar 170.2 cm Rihanna +2.8 cm
Shakira "Can't Remember to Forget You" (2014) 157 cm Rihanna +16 cm
Nicki Minaj "Fly" (2011) 160 cm Rihanna +13 cm
Taylor Swift Fellow pop superstar 180 cm Swift +7 cm

Drake: a familiar pairing

Rihanna and Drake have released several collaborations, including "What's My Name?" (2010), "Take Care" (2011) and "Work" (2016). The site lists Drake at 182.9 cm, about 10 cm (4 inches) taller than Rihanna. In their music videos, she often wears heels that bring her close to his height.

Shakira and Nicki Minaj: Rihanna as the taller partner

In the video for "Can't Remember to Forget You," Shakira, at 157 cm, is about 16 cm shorter than Rihanna, one of the largest height gaps in any of her duets. On "Fly," Nicki Minaj, listed at 160 cm, is about 13 cm shorter.

Beyoncé and Taylor Swift

Rihanna is often compared with Beyoncé and Taylor Swift as one of the defining female pop stars of the 21st century. By height, she falls between them: about 3 cm taller than Beyoncé and about 7 cm shorter than Swift.

Rihanna on screen

Rihanna's film roles include Battleship (2012), the animated film Home (2015), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) and Ocean's 8 (2018), and she voiced Smurfette in Smurfs (2025). She also played Marion Crane in the final season of Bates Motel. Here is how she compares with some of her co-stars:

Film Co-star Co-star height (site data) Difference
Battleship (2012) Liam Neeson 193 cm Neeson +20 cm
Battleship (2012) Brooklyn Decker 175 cm Decker +2 cm
Valerian (2017) Dane DeHaan 173 cm Equal
Valerian (2017) Cara Delevingne 176 cm Delevingne +3 cm
Ocean's 8 (2018) Anne Hathaway 173 cm Equal
Ocean's 8 (2018) Sandra Bullock 171 cm Rihanna +2 cm

Two of those comparisons are exact matches. In Valerian, Dane DeHaan, the film's male lead, is listed at the same 173 cm, and in Ocean's 8, Anne Hathaway is also listed at 173 cm. In Battleship, by contrast, Liam Neeson, at 193 cm, is 20 cm taller, the largest gap with any of her co-stars in the site's data. Neeson played the fleet admiral and Rihanna a weapons specialist, and the military setting, with its flat boots and uniforms, shows the real difference more clearly than red-carpet photos ever do: without heels, a 20 cm gap is roughly a full head.

In Ocean's 8, an ensemble heist film led by Sandra Bullock, Rihanna was one of the taller members of the main cast: about 2 cm taller than Bullock and level with Hathaway.

How Rihanna compares with the average Barbadian woman

Barbados has one of the taller female populations in the Caribbean. NCD-RisC's estimates put Barbadian women born in 1976 at 164.3 cm and those born in 1996 at 165.3 cm, so women of Rihanna's generation averaged about 165 cm.

Comparison group (NCD-RisC) Average height Rihanna's difference
Barbadian women, 1976 birth cohort 164.3 cm +8.7 cm
Barbadian women, 1996 birth cohort 165.3 cm +7.7 cm
Barbadian men, 1996 birth cohort 175.9 cm −2.9 cm
Barbadian women, 1896 birth cohort 152.1 cm +20.9 cm
American women, 1996 birth cohort 163.5 cm +9.5 cm

At 173 cm, Rihanna is about 8 cm (3 inches) taller than the average Barbadian woman of her generation and only about 3 cm shorter than the average Barbadian man.

The Barbadian trend over the past century is one of the steepest in the region. NCD-RisC estimates that women born in Barbados in 1896 averaged 152.1 cm, and that the average rose by about 13 cm to 165.3 cm for the 1996 cohort. For comparison, average height for women in neighboring Trinidad and Tobago rose by about 6 cm over the same period, to 160.6 cm. Researchers attribute gains of this kind mainly to improvements in childhood nutrition, health care and living conditions.

How Rihanna compares with American women

Rihanna has lived and worked mainly in the United States for most of her career, so the US comparison is also useful. The CDC's measured NHANES data for 2015–2018 gives detailed percentiles:

NHANES 2015–2018, women aged 30–39 Height
Mean 162.7 cm
85th percentile 170.1 cm
90th percentile 171.3 cm
Rihanna 173 cm
95th percentile 173.4 cm

At 173 cm, Rihanna sits just below the 95th percentile for American women aged 30 to 39, the age group she was in during the survey, which means she is taller than roughly 93 to 94 percent of women her age. Against all American women aged 20 and over, whose 95th percentile was 172.5 cm, she is in the top 5 percent.

That is noticeably tall, but not extreme: about one in twenty American women her age is her height or taller. To place your own height against American women of Rihanna's generation, try the height percentile calculator; for other countries' averages, the average height hub has all 200.

What 173 cm looks like

At 173 cm, Rihanna is the same height as Dua Lipa, Kelly Rowland and Anne Hathaway in the site's data, and the same as Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. She is a little taller than Beyoncé and Adele, and about 7 cm shorter than Taylor Swift and Kendall Jenner.

Next to a typical American man, measured at an average of 175.3 cm in NHANES, she would be only about 2 cm shorter barefoot, and in heels she would usually be the taller of the two.

Next to the comic and animated characters she has voiced, height loses meaning altogether: in Home and Smurfs, her characters are drawn at whatever scale the animators choose, a reminder that a performer's real height and her screen presence are separate things.
