Brook's official height: 277 cm (9′1″) after the timeskip

Brook, the Straw Hat Pirates' skeleton musician, has two official heights, both from Eiichiro Oda's SBS question corners in the One Piece volumes. When he joined the story, SBS Volume 51 (page 26) gave him a height of 266 cm (8′9″). After the two-year timeskip, SBS Volume 69 (page 66) updated him to 277 cm (9′1″), according to the One Piece Wiki's citations.

The site uses 277 cm, the post-timeskip figure, as Brook's headline height. That's the version of Brook from the Sabaody reunion onward: "Soul King" Brook, rock star, swordsman and one of Luffy's commanders.

Brook first appeared in chapter 442 of the manga, published in Weekly Shōnen Jump on January 29, 2007, and in episode 337 of the anime. He's the ninth member of the crew and the eighth to join, recruited at the end of the Thriller Bark arc. His birthday, April 3, was revealed in SBS Volume 50.

The skeleton who grew 11 centimeters

Brook's growth during the timeskip is one of the oddest details in One Piece's character stats. He's a living skeleton, brought back by the Revive-Revive Fruit (Yomi Yomi no Mi) after his body had decayed to bare bone, and yet between ages 88 and 90 he gained 11 cm, far more than any other Straw Hat except the cyborg Franky.

The One Piece Wiki notes the oddity directly: despite being a skeleton, he grew to 277 cm during the timeskip. Oda has never given an in-story explanation, and it reads best as one of the series' running jokes. Brook constantly makes skeleton puns ("though I have no eyes!"), and a skeleton growing taller in his 90s fits his absurdist sense of humor.

Compare that with the rest of the crew. The other humans grew modestly over the same two years: Luffy by 2 cm, Zoro by 3 cm, Sanji by 3 cm, Usopp by 2 cm, Nami by 1 cm. Franky, who rebuilt his own body, jumped from 225 to 240 cm. Brook's 11 cm puts him second only to Franky, and Franky at least had cybernetic upgrades to explain it.

Brook versus the Straw Hat crew

Using the post-timeskip SBS Volume 69 figures that the site's One Piece data follows, here's where Brook stands:

Straw Hat Height (cm) Height (ft/in) vs Brook
Jinbe 301 9′11″ +24 cm
Brook 277 9′1″ —
Franky 240 7′10″ −37 cm
Nico Robin 188 6′2″ −89 cm
Roronoa Zoro 181 5′11″ −96 cm
Sanji 180 5′11″ −97 cm
Usopp 176 5′9″ −101 cm
Monkey D. Luffy 174 5′9″ −103 cm
Nami 170 5′7″ −107 cm
Tony Tony Chopper 90 2′11″ −187 cm

Before Jinbe joined, Brook was the tallest Straw Hat by a wide margin. The One Piece Wiki now describes him as the second tallest, edged out by the fish-man. The gap is 24 cm, a full head.

The more striking comparison is with the captain. At 277 cm, Brook is more than a meter taller than Luffy. When the two stand side by side, Luffy's head comes up to roughly Brook's lower ribcage,

At the other extreme, Brook is more than three times the height of Chopper in his normal form. Those two are frequently paired in comic-relief scenes (along with Usopp), and the size contrast is part of the gag.

Long, thin and almost weightless

Brook's body is all length and no mass. He's literally a skeleton in formal clothes, and no official weight has ever been published. The story shows that he's extremely light: Wikipedia's summary of the character notes that his reduced weight lets him jump extraordinarily high and even run across water, abilities shown in chapters 443 and 493.

That combination is unique among very tall characters. Most giants in One Piece, like Kaido or Big Mom, are enormous and heavy. Franky is broad and armored. Jinbe is massive and powerful. Brook is the opposite: nearly three meters tall and practically weightless, a body built for speed and agility. His fighting style follows from it. He uses a shikomizue, a cane sword, and fights with quick fencing thrusts and a technique so fast that its victims don't realize they've been cut until he sheathes his blade.

His one bit of bulk is the afro. Despite having no skin, Brook kept his hair, which he says is because it has very strong roots. The afro adds visible height on the page, and depending on the drawing his top hat adds more. The official 277 cm presumably measures Brook himself; with the afro and the crown-brimmed hat of his rock-star era, his apparent height in many panels is noticeably greater.

Brook before death

Brook wasn't always a skeleton. The One Piece Wiki describes him before his death as a tall, tan, skinny man with a distinctive face. At 11 he was an orphan living in a junkyard in the Kingdom of Esperia; by his twenties he led a royal battle convoy there; at 38 he died with the Rumbar Pirates in the Florian Triangle. No height is published for the living Brook, but the art shows him as already very tall.

His second life began when the Revive-Revive Fruit returned his soul to his body. Because his soul got lost in the Florian Triangle's fog, by the time it found its way back, the body had decayed to bones, leaving only the afro intact. He then spent decades alone on the drifting ship, waiting to keep his promise to the whale Laboon.

Wikipedia notes that Oda first conceived a skeleton musician around 2000, at about the time Laboon was introduced, seven years before Brook actually appeared. Early concept art gave him a western-style cowboy hat instead of an afro. The tall, thin silhouette was part of the idea from the start: a skeleton reads best when it's long and gangly.

Soul King style and how it changes Brook's silhouette

Brook's wardrobe has changed more than most crew members', and because he's so tall and thin, his clothes do a lot to shape how big he looks. Before the timeskip, the One Piece Wiki describes him in gentleman's attire: a black coat, top hat, trousers and cane, slightly tattered from decades alone, with a blue cravat. The top hat sat on top of the afro, stacking even more apparent height onto an already 266 cm frame.

After the timeskip, as "Soul King" Brook, he reappears in rock-star clothes: heart-shaped sunglasses, a yellow feather boa, a new top hat with a giant crown on the brim, and orange-red floral trousers. Later arcs put him in a striped coat taken from Brownbeard's centaur unit on Punk Hazard, a long magenta coat in Dressrosa, and a polka-dot shirt with striped trousers on Zou. Vertical stripes and long coats on a nearly three-meter skeleton make him look even more elongated than his listed height suggests.

Brook in the anime and live action

In the anime, Brook is voiced by Chō in Japanese and Ian Sinclair in the English dub, and he has appeared in the One Piece films from the tenth onward, according to Wikipedia. Putting a 277 cm character in the same shot as a 174 cm captain means the animators have to fit a figure more than a meter taller into every crew scene.

Netflix's live-action series featured Brook in the episode "Good Whale Hunting", played by Martial T, Wikipedia notes. A live-action Brook raises an obvious practical problem: no actor is nine feet tall, so any full portrayal has to rely on effects, puppetry or a digital character to reach his canon height.

Brook has been a steady favorite with readers. Wikipedia records that he has ranked in the top 30 of several Shōnen Jump popularity polls and reached 26th place in the worldwide character poll.

Brook versus the tallest real people

At 277 cm, Brook is taller than any human in recorded history. Robert Wadlow, the American man documented as the tallest person ever, measured 2.72 m (8′11″), according to Wikidata's referenced statement. Brook's post-timeskip height beats Wadlow by about 5 cm.

The pre-timeskip Brook is a different story: at 266 cm he was about 6 cm shorter than Wadlow. So the timeskip moved Brook from "almost the tallest human ever" to "taller than any human ever measured".

Comparison Height Brook (277 cm) difference
Robert Wadlow (tallest human recorded) 272 cm Brook +5 cm
Pre-timeskip Brook 266 cm Brook +11 cm
Sultan Kösen (site data) 251 cm Brook +26 cm
Average U.S. man born 1996 (NCD-RisC) 177.1 cm Brook +100 cm
Average Japanese man born 1996 (NCD-RisC) 170.8 cm Brook +106 cm

Put another way, a typical Japanese man, the kind of reader One Piece was first written for, would stand about level with Brook's sternum. Standard doorways, at roughly 2 meters, would hit Brook around the shoulders. He'd have to duck under nearly every door on Earth.

Brook against the giants of One Piece

For all his height, Brook is small next to the series' true giants. Here's how he compares with some of the larger characters in the site's data:

Character Height vs Brook
Big Mom (Charlotte Linlin) 880 cm about 3.2× Brook
Kaido 710 cm about 2.6× Brook
Whitebeard 666 cm about 2.4× Brook
Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) 344 cm +67 cm
Jinbe 301 cm +24 cm
Shanks 199 cm −78 cm

Brook's best-known moment against a giant came on Whole Cake Island, where he infiltrated Big Mom's chateau and copied her secret Road Poneglyphs, one of the most important finds of the series. Wikipedia notes that this treasure helps reveal the location of the One Piece. Standing well over three times his height, Big Mom is one of the few beings who can make Brook look small.
