Real people the same height as All Might

All Might's official height: 220 cm in the Volume 1 profile

All Might, the Symbol of Peace and eighth holder of One For All in Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia, is listed at 220 cm (7′3″). The figure comes from the bonus character profile, or omake, printed in the manga's first volume, the book VIZ Media published in English in August 2015. It was one of the first character statistics the series ever released, and it has never been revised.

The same profile pages, as summarized by the My Hero Academia Wiki, give him a birthday of June 10. Other official data books add that he was born in Tokyo and has blood type A. The wiki also lists two weights for him, which tell their own story about his injury and decline:

Stat Official value Notes
Height 220 cm (7′3″) Volume 1 omake
Weight before injury 274 kg (604 lb) Prime muscle form
Weight in muscle form (later) 255 kg (562 lb) After the fight with All For One
Birthday June 10 Volume 1 omake
Age at first appearance 53+ Rises to 63+ after the timeskip
Blood type A Official data book

One height, two bodies

All Might is unusual because he has two very different appearances. In his muscle form, he is a towering, heavily shaded hero modeled on classic American comics. In his true form, the result of a crippling wound from his first fight with All For One, he is drawn as a very skinny man with sharp features, long limbs and an extended neck, missing his stomach and part of his respiratory system.

Only one height is published, and nothing in canon suggests the true form is shorter. The wiki notes that he wore baggy clothing to cover the change in body mass between forms, not the change in height. Mass is what changes: the difference between 255 kg and a skeletal frame is the joke behind several early scenes, including Izuku's first encounter with the deflated hero. For height comparisons, this site uses 220 cm for both versions.

A body built on comic-book proportions

The numbers in All Might's profile are not meant to be realistic. At 220 cm and 255 kg, his body mass index works out to about 52.7, and at his pre-injury 274 kg it would be about 56.6. For a real person those values would indicate extreme obesity, but All Might is drawn as almost entirely muscle. The weights tell readers that his body is denser and heavier than any human's could be, which fits a hero who can change the weather with a punch.

According to Wikipedia's summary of the character, Horikoshi based All Might on a combination of Superman and Captain America. The wiki's trivia shows how deeply the American influence runs: his costumes use the colors of the US flag (except an unpopular black "Bronze Age" suit), and his finishing moves are named after US states and cities, such as Detroit Smash, Texas Smash and New Hampshire Smash. The heavily shaded muscle style, according to the Ultra Analysis character guide, dates from his time studying in the United States.

Horikoshi also commented on how hard All Might is to draw. The Volume 1 notes say that a single frontal shot of him can wear out one or two pen nibs because of the amount of shading involved. Earlier concept designs made him an older veteran with a smaller role; editors called those designs lame, and Horikoshi made him more imposing and slightly younger-looking.

Compared with his American inspirations

Character Height Difference vs All Might
All Might 220 cm (7′3″) —
Superman 190.5 cm (6′3″) −29.5 cm
Captain America 188 cm (6′2″) −32 cm

Even next to the heroes who inspired him, All Might is huge: roughly 30 cm taller than either. Horikoshi took the silhouette of a classic Western superhero and scaled it up by about a head.

All Might next to the My Hero Academia cast

The table below uses heights recorded on this site, drawn from the volume omake profiles and the official character guides.

Character Height Difference vs All Might Role
All For One 225 cm (7′5″) +5 cm Archenemy
All Might 220 cm (7′3″) — Symbol of Peace
Mirai Sasaki (Sir Nighteye) 200 cm (6′7″) −20 cm Former sidekick
Endeavor 195 cm (6′5″) −25 cm Rival, later No. 1 hero
Shota Aizawa 183 cm (6′0″) −37 cm Fellow U.A. teacher
Mirio Togata 181 cm (5′11″) −39 cm Original successor candidate
Shoto Todoroki 176 cm (5′9″) −44 cm Student
Tomura Shigaraki 175 cm (5′9″) −45 cm Nana Shimura's grandson, villain
Katsuki Bakugo 172 cm (5′8″) −48 cm Student
Izuku Midoriya 166 cm (5′5″) −54 cm Successor
Gran Torino 120 cm (3′11″) −100 cm Former teacher

A few relationships stand out.

All Might and All For One. The only major character listed taller than All Might is his archenemy. A Jump GIGA Spring 2022 profile gives All For One a height of 225 cm, 5 cm more than the hero. Their battles are fights between the two largest figures in the story.

All Might and Izuku. The gap between mentor and successor is 54 cm. When Izuku first meets All Might, he is a 14-year-old middle schooler; even at the 166 cm listed for him at U.A., he reaches only about All Might's chest. The size difference makes the passing of One For All a visual statement as well as a story beat: the smallest boy in the room inherits the power of the biggest man in the world.

All Might and Gran Torino. His old teacher, Sorahiko Torino, is listed at just 120 cm in his current, elderly form, which makes the pair a full meter apart. The wiki notes Torino was tall and well built in his youth, but the present-day contrast is played for comedy whenever the tiny old man scolds the giant hero.

All Might and Endeavor. At 195 cm, Endeavor is one of the tallest heroes in Japan and still falls 25 cm short. That gap mirrors Endeavor's lifelong frustration at never closing the distance between himself and the No. 1 hero.

Why All Might looks even bigger than 220 cm

All Might's design adds visual size on top of his listed height. Three features do most of the work.

  • The hair tufts. His blond hair is swept back with two tufts that stand up at the front, giving his silhouette a pair of "antennae" that sit above his skull. On a height chart measured to the top of the head, those tufts can make him look several centimeters taller than 220 cm.
  • The shading. His muscle form is drawn with dense crosshatching and shadows over his face, often hiding everything but his pupils. Heavy shading makes a figure read as more massive, which is why Horikoshi said a single frontal drawing could use up one or two pen nibs.
  • The width. At 255 kg, All Might is drawn far broader than any other hero. A wide figure next to slim teenagers looks taller than the numbers alone suggest, and the story leans on that whenever he stands in front of Class 1-A.

His weight figures also show how the injury changed him. The drop from 274 kg before his wound to 255 kg in his later muscle form is a loss of 19 kg, about 7 percent of his body weight, even while he could still hold the heroic form. In his true form, the loss is far greater, though no official weight is given for it.

When comparing All Might with other characters, two common mistakes are worth avoiding. The first is assuming that his true form is shorter; nothing official supports that, and his long limbs are drawn to suggest the same frame stripped of muscle. The second is measuring him in his Armored All Might suit from the Final War, which adds bulk and boots and is not a fair barefoot comparison.

All Might's height across his life

Only one height is published for All Might, the 220 cm adult figure. The manga and the Volume Origin concept art do show him at other stages:

  • As a U.A. student, he is drawn as a lean, fit young man in his first hero costume.
  • In the United States, according to the concept art notes, he lived there until age 23 and met David Shield at 21. The wiki says he adopted his signature hair tufts and muscle form during that period.
  • In his prime as the No. 1 hero, he weighed 274 kg.
  • After the injury, his muscle form dropped to 255 kg and his true form became skeletal.
  • After the Final War, his legs were crushed and he uses a wheelchair, which removes standing height from many of his later scenes entirely.

No profile gives numbers for his younger self, so any height you see for teenage Toshinori Yagi is an estimate.

What 220 cm means for a real person

Converted, 220 cm is 86.6 inches, or about 7′2½″, usually rounded to 7′3″. It is an extraordinary height in any country. The NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, whose estimates this site uses for national averages, puts Japanese men born in 1996 at about 170.8 cm as adults. All Might is almost 50 cm taller than that. Even against the US male average of 177.1 cm, he is more than 40 cm taller. You can see how far outside the normal range he sits on the average height in Japan page.

Basketball is the one place where real people come close. On this site's figures:

Person Height Difference vs All Might
Yao Ming 229 cm (7′6″) +9 cm
All Might 220 cm (7′3″) —
Shaquille O'Neal 216 cm (7′1″) −4 cm
Average Japanese man (NCD-RisC, 1996 cohort) 170.8 cm −49.2 cm

All Might would be taller than Shaquille O'Neal but shorter than Yao Ming. Neither player comes anywhere near his listed weight, though: the real men who reach his height are lean, while All Might's 255 kg is far beyond anything a real 220 cm athlete carries.

Comparing All Might yourself

The easiest way to appreciate All Might's scale is to put him beside ordinary people. In the height comparison tool you can line him up with Izuku, Endeavor, All For One or real athletes, and the height difference calculator gives the exact gap between his 220 cm and any height you enter. A few comparisons worth trying:

  • All Might vs Izuku: 54 cm between the Symbol of Peace and his successor.
  • All Might vs All For One: the villain's 225 cm is one of the few heights above his.
  • All Might vs Superman: about 30 cm taller than one of his inspirations.
  • All Might vs Shaquille O'Neal: 4 cm taller than one of the biggest men in NBA history.

Spoiler note: this article mentions All Might's injury, his true form and his condition after the Final War only as far as they affect how his height and build appear on the page.
