How tall is Yao Ming?

Yao Ming is listed on this site at 229 cm (7′6″), the height on his NBA.com profile, which gives 7′6″ (2.29 m) and a weight of 310 lb (141 kg). He is one of the tallest people ever to play in the NBA and, for much of his career with the Houston Rockets from 2002 to 2011, he was the tallest player in the league. His listing has been stable throughout his career and in retirement, and no reputable source gives a meaningfully different figure.

To put 229 cm in perspective: it is about 60 cm taller than the average Chinese man of his generation and 52 cm taller than the average American man. A standard US interior door is 203 cm tall, so Yao has to bend significantly to pass through one, and the rim on a basketball hoop, at 305 cm, is only 76 cm above the top of his head.

A family of basketball players

Yao's height has a clear family background. He was born on September 12, 1980, in Shanghai, the only child of two former professional basketball players. According to Wikipedia, his father, Yao Zhiyuan, is 6′7″ (2.01 m), and his mother, Fang Fengdi, is 6′3″ (1.91 m) and was a member of China's national women's team.

Both parents are far above the averages for their own generations in China. Using the NCD-RisC data, Chinese men born in the mid-1950s averaged about 168 cm and women about 157 cm, so Yao's father stood about 33 cm above the average man and his mother about 34 cm above the average woman. Height is strongly heritable in well-nourished populations, and children of very tall parents tend to be very tall themselves, though they usually "regress" partway toward the population average. Yao, at 229 cm, ended up taller than both parents.

Family member Height Above own generation's average (approx.)
Yao Zhiyuan (father) 201 cm (6′7″) about +33 cm
Fang Fengdi (mother) 191 cm (6′3″) about +34 cm
Yao Ming 229 cm (7′6″) about +59 cm

Growing up tall

Wikipedia records that Yao measured about 5′5″ (1.65 m) at around age 10, already far taller than his classmates, and that doctors predicted an adult height of 7′3″. He surpassed that forecast by about 8 cm. That gap illustrates how uncertain adult-height predictions can be at the very top of the distribution. The site's height calculator explains the standard prediction methods and their limits; such estimates are least reliable for children who are far from average.

Yao joined the Shanghai Sharks' youth team as a teenager and played for the senior team from 1997 to 2002. In his final season, 2001–02, the Sharks won their first Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) championship.

The first pick of the 2002 NBA draft

The Houston Rockets selected Yao with the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft, making him the first international player taken first overall who had not played college basketball in the United States. His arrival generated enormous interest in China and around the world, and Rockets games became a major television event in his home country.

Yao's height was the obvious headline, but scouts were equally interested in his skill. Unlike many players of his size, he had soft hands, a reliable mid-range jump shot and good free-throw shooting for a center. That combination allowed him to play a finesse game near the basket rather than relying only on size.

He was an eight-time All-Star (2003–2009 and 2011), and ESPN's 2016 Hall of Fame coverage notes he was also a five-time All-NBA selection and three-time MVP of the FIBA Asia Championship.

Yao vs Shaq

The Yao–Shaquille O'Neal matchup was one of the most anticipated of the early 2000s. In their first meeting, on January 17, 2003, Yao recorded 10 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocked shots, including a key dunk in overtime, while O'Neal scored 31. At 229 cm, Yao had about 13 cm of height on O'Neal, who countered with far greater strength and mass. In 2016, the two were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in the same class, along with Allen Iverson.

Comparing Yao with today's giants: shoes versus barefoot

Yao played his entire NBA career before the league changed how it records heights. Until 2019, teams submitted heights largely at their own discretion, and many were measured in shoes; since then, official listings must be barefoot measurements. That change matters when comparing Yao with the current generation of very tall players.

Victor Wembanyama, for example, is listed on this site at 223.5 cm (7′4″), a figure taken under the NBA's barefoot rule. Yao's 229 cm listing comes from the earlier era. If Yao's listing included shoes, as some historical listings did, his barefoot height could be a few centimeters lower, which would bring the two closer than the 5.5 cm gap in the table suggests. There is no published barefoot measurement of Yao that confirms or refutes this, so the site uses the official 229 cm listing, while noting that cross-era comparisons always carry some uncertainty.

What is not in doubt is the overall picture. Both players sit in the top fraction of a percent of human height, and both have combined that size with unusual skill for their stature: Yao with a soft shooting touch, Wembanyama with ball handling and perimeter shooting more typical of a wing.

Player Listed height Listing era NBA debut
Yao Ming 229 cm (7′6″) Pre-2019 (shoe heights common) 2002
Tacko Fall 228.6 cm (7′6″) Post-2019 listing 2019
Victor Wembanyama 223.5 cm (7′4″) Barefoot rule 2023

Why centers of Yao's size are so rare

Height in adult men follows an approximately normal distribution. In most national populations the standard deviation is about 7 cm, so a man 59 cm above his country's average, as Yao is in China, sits more than eight standard deviations above the mean. That is so far into the tail that only a handful of people in a population of hundreds of millions reach it. Many of the tallest people in recorded history reached their height because of medical conditions affecting growth hormone; Yao's height, by contrast, has been widely attributed to his family background, with two exceptionally tall parents.

For basketball, that rarity is what makes players like Yao so valuable. Height cannot be coached, and the combination of extreme height with coordination, mobility and skill is rarer still. It explains why scouts traveled to Shanghai to watch him as a teenager and why the Rockets were willing to use the first pick of the draft on a player who had never competed in the United States.

The cost of extreme height: injuries and early retirement

Height brings advantages in basketball, but at Yao's size it also brings mechanical stress. Running, jumping and landing generate forces that rise with body mass, and much of that load passes through the feet and ankles. Yao missed significant time with foot and ankle injuries during his last six seasons, and he announced his retirement on July 20, 2011, at age 30.

Many of the tallest players in NBA history have had careers shortened or interrupted by lower-body injuries. That pattern does not mean every very tall athlete will be injured, but it is a well-documented risk, and teams now invest heavily in load management and strength programs for their tallest players.

Yao and Tracy McGrady

From 2004 to 2009, Yao and Tracy McGrady were the Rockets' central pairing. McGrady, at 203 cm, was a tall wing by most standards, yet he was 26 cm shorter than Yao. ESPN's Hall of Fame coverage quoted McGrady saying he was proud to call Yao his friend.

Yao next to ordinary people

Photographs of Yao with fans and celebrities are striking because the gap is so large. Next to Kevin Hart, the difference is 71 cm, so Hart's head reaches roughly to Yao's lower ribs. Next to an average adult man, Yao's shoulders are at about the other man's eye level. You can try any combination in the height difference calculator.

How Yao compares with the average Chinese man

According to the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, Chinese men born in 1976 reached an average adult height of 169.3 cm, and those born in 1996 averaged 171.8 cm. For Yao's 1980 birth year, the average is about 169.8 cm (5′7″), so Yao is roughly 59 cm (23 inches) taller than the typical Chinese man of his generation.

China has seen one of the largest increases in average height of any large country over the past century. Men born in 1896 averaged just 161.0 cm, more than 10 cm below the 1996 cohort. Rising incomes, improved nutrition and better childhood health explain much of that change. The full trend is on the China average height page.

Life after basketball: a 229 cm administrator

After retiring, Yao returned to China and took on prominent roles in the sport. According to Wikipedia, he was president of the Chinese Basketball Association from February 23, 2017, to October 31, 2024. He also served as China's flag bearer at the opening ceremonies of the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics, where his height made him visible across the entire stadium. At the 2008 Beijing ceremony he walked into the National Stadium alongside a young survivor of that year's Sichuan earthquake, one of the most memorable images of the evening, partly because of the dramatic difference in their heights. For many viewers in China, Yao carrying the flag became a symbol of the country's growing presence in international sport.

Yao married Ye Li, herself a basketball player, in 2007. Their daughter was born in Houston in 2010. Since retiring, Yao has kept his family life largely out of the public eye, while remaining one of the most recognizable public figures in Chinese sport.

What 7′6″ means in daily life

At 229 cm, almost nothing in the built environment is designed for Yao. Beds, cars, airplane seats, showers and clothing all need to be adapted or custom-made. His arm span and reach are similarly extreme, letting him touch heights that most people need a ladder to reach. For travel, tall athletes like Yao often need extra legroom or special seating arrangements, and hotels sometimes provide extended beds.

His height is so far outside the norm that he sits among the tallest people in the world, not just the NBA.
