Joel Embiid's official height: 7′0″
The Philadelphia 76ers and the NBA list Joel Embiid at 213 cm (7′0″), the figure this site uses. NBA.com also lists his weight at 270 pounds (122 kg). He has carried the 7-foot listing since his rookie media guide in 2014–15, and it remained unchanged after the league's 2019 rule requiring physician-certified heights taken without shoes.
Embiid's height has an unusual paper trail, because he never measured at the NBA draft combine. He, Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker, the top three prospects of 2014, all skipped it. Instead, Embiid was measured privately in Santa Monica, California, in May 2014. The Lawrence Journal-World reported the results: 7′1″ in shoes, a 7′5¾″ wingspan and a 9′5½″ standing reach. Shoes usually add about an inch to an inch and a quarter, so that workout implies a barefoot height of roughly 7′0″, consistent with his listing.

The "7′2″" question
For a period in 2015 and 2016, Embiid's height became a small Philadelphia mystery, and the reporting on it is a fine example of how listed heights can drift from what teams and players say. In November 2016 the local news site Billy Penn investigated. It found that the Sixers' roster, the NBA's bio, ESPN, CBS Sports, and the team's 2014–15 and 2015–16 media guides all listed Embiid at 7′0″. Yet:
- The arena's public-address announcer introduced him at home games as "the 7-2 center from Kansas."
- An NBA.com story in October 2016 described him as 7′2″.
- A Sixers beat writer, Keith Pompey, had reported in December 2015 that the team measured Embiid at 7′2″.
- Coach Brett Brown said in 2015 that Embiid was taller than his listing and relayed a text in which Embiid joked that he was 7′2″ in sandals.
The Billy Penn writer concluded that 7′2″ was plausible, since teams sometimes round up for centers. However, when the league introduced its certified shoes-off measurements in 2019, Embiid's listing stayed at 7′0″. That suggests the 7′2″ figure described Embiid in footwear, or was simply an announcer's flourish, while 7′0″ is his best barefoot figure. In basketball shoes on court he likely stands about 7′1″, which matches the 2014 workout.
From volleyball to the NBA in five years
Embiid's path to basketball is one of the fastest in NBA history, and it is closely tied to his size. Born in Yaoundé to military officer Thomas Embiid and his wife Christine, he played volleyball and soccer as a child and planned to play volleyball professionally in Europe. He only began playing basketball at about 15, modeling his game on the Nigerian-born Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon. Fellow Yaoundé native and NBA forward Luc Mbah a Moute discovered him at a camp and helped him move to the United States at 16.
He attended Montverde Academy and then The Rock School in Gainesville, Florida, before a single season at Kansas, where he averaged 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 23.1 minutes. The Sixers drafted him third overall in 2014 despite foot injuries, which, along with knee problems, delayed his NBA debut until the 2016–17 season.
Volleyball is a revealing background for a 7-footer. The sport rewards timing, vertical reach and soft hands, all of which carry over to rebounding and shot-blocking. Embiid's footwork, often compared to Olajuwon's, is unusually fluid for a player of his height, and starting the sport late meant he learned post moves as a tall teenager rather than relying on size as a child.
Height and dominance: the MVP years
At his peak, Embiid combined the size of a traditional center with guard-like skills. He led the NBA in scoring in 2021–22 and 2022–23, the first center to do so since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000 and the first international player ever to lead the league in scoring. He won the 2023 MVP award. In January 2024 he scored 70 points against the San Antonio Spurs, breaking Wilt Chamberlain's 76ers franchise record and becoming only the third center, after Chamberlain and David Robinson, to score 70 in an NBA game.
His height is central to that scoring. A 7-footer with a 7′5¾″ wingspan can shoot over almost any defender from the elbow and the post, and Embiid added a reliable face-up jumper and a high volume of free throws by drawing contact with his size. On defense, his standing reach of 9′5½″ means he can touch a point less than seven inches below the rim without leaving the floor, which makes him a natural rim protector.
Embiid next to other centers and teammates
The table compares Embiid with fellow centers, rivals and teammates using this site's figures.
| Player | Connection | Height (site data) | Difference vs Embiid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Victor Wembanyama | Spurs center when Embiid scored 70 against San Antonio | 223.5 cm (7′4″) | +10.5 cm |
| Shaquille O'Neal | Last center scoring champ before Embiid | 216 cm (7′1″) | +3 cm |
| Joel Embiid | 213 cm (7′0″) | — | |
| Hakeem Olajuwon | Childhood model | 213 cm (7′0″) | 0 cm |
| Anthony Davis | 2024 Olympic teammate | 208.3 cm (6′10″) | −5 cm |
| Nikola Jokić | MVP rival | 208 cm (6′10″) | −5 cm |
| Pascal Siakam | Fellow Cameroonian NBA star | 208 cm (6′10″) | −5 cm |
| LeBron James | 2024 Olympic teammate | 206 cm (6′9″) | −7 cm |
| Andrew Wiggins | Kansas teammate | 203 cm (6′8″) | −10 cm |
| Jimmy Butler | 76ers teammate, 2018–19 | 198.1 cm (6′6″) | −15 cm |
| James Harden | 76ers teammate, 2022–23 | 196 cm (6′5″) | −17 cm |
The match with Hakeem Olajuwon is the most poignant. Embiid modeled his early game on Olajuwon's footwork, and the two share a 213 cm figure in this site's data, so the young Cameroonian grew up imitating a player of exactly his own eventual height. Both also came to basketball relatively late from other sports, Olajuwon from soccer and team handball in Lagos and Embiid from volleyball and soccer in Yaoundé, and both are known for footwork that looks more like a guard's than a traditional center's.
The Nikola Jokić rivalry framed the 2021, 2022 and 2023 MVP races. Embiid is about 5 cm taller in the site's data, and the two represent different templates for a modern center: Embiid as a scorer and rim protector, Jokić as a passer and offensive hub.
Living and playing at 7 feet
Being 213 cm tall changes everyday life as much as it changes basketball. A standard interior door in the United States is 80 inches, about 203 cm, high, so Embiid has to dip his head by roughly 10 cm to get through one, and more in shoes. Standard beds of about 190 to 203 cm are shorter than he is, and economy airline seats are designed around passengers of average size, which is why very tall athletes so often travel on chartered team planes with extra legroom. Even basketball arenas, hotel showers and team buses are designed for people more than a foot shorter than he is.
On the court the same arithmetic works in his favor. With a standing reach of 9′5½″, Embiid's fingertips are only about 6½ inches below a 10-foot rim before he jumps. That means he can contest shots at the rim with a modest leap, block shots without fouling, and catch lobs that shorter centers cannot reach. It also means he can shoot over most defenders from mid-range with a release point well above their outstretched hands. A guard of 6′3″, by comparison, reaches about 8 feet, more than a foot and a half lower.
The 2014 draft and the Kansas pairing
Embiid's Kansas teammate Andrew Wiggins, the first pick in 2014, measured 6′8¾″ in shoes with a 7′0″ wingspan in the same week Embiid was measured in Santa Monica, according to the Lawrence Journal-World. That puts Wiggins about 10 cm shorter than Embiid in the site's data. The two were the headline pair of that draft class, a long wing and a 7-foot center from the same college team, and both went on to win NBA honors: Wiggins a championship with Golden State in 2022, and Embiid the 2023 MVP.
Weight and build
Embiid is one of the heaviest stars in the league. NBA.com now lists him at 270 pounds, the figure this site uses, while earlier reference data shows about 250 pounds from his early seasons. At 213 cm, 270 pounds corresponds to a body mass index of about 27; at 250 pounds, about 25. For a 7-footer who plays physically in the post, that mass is an asset: it helps him establish position, absorb contact and draw fouls. It is also worth remembering that the league stopped collecting weights in its 2019 certification process because weight fluctuates during a season, so listed weights are reference values rather than dated measurements.
His knee and foot injuries have been widely reported and have limited his availability in several seasons, including the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons, when the team managed his minutes. We note this because it is part of the public record of his career, not to speculate about his health.
Three nationalities and the 2024 Olympics
Embiid was eligible to represent Cameroon, France and the United States. France granted him citizenship in July 2022, and he became a US citizen in September of that year. He ultimately chose Team USA for the Paris 2024 Olympics, saying he wanted to win gold for his son, who was born in the United States, and he won the gold medal alongside LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis.
Compared with average men in Cameroon and the US
Embiid's birthplace makes for one of the most striking average-height comparisons in the NBA. Using the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's estimates:
| Comparison (NCD-RisC) | Average man | Embiid's difference |
|---|---|---|
| Cameroon, 1996 cohort | 167.8 cm (5′6″) | +45.2 cm |
| Cameroon, 1976 cohort | 171.2 cm (5′7½″) | +41.8 cm |
| United States, 1996 cohort | 177.1 cm (5′10″) | +35.9 cm |
Embiid is about 45 cm, roughly 18 inches, taller than the average Cameroonian man of his generation, and about 36 cm taller than the average American man. Either way he is far beyond the 99.9th percentile.
The Cameroon trend itself is notable. NCD-RisC estimates that Cameroonian men born in 1976 averaged about 171.2 cm, but those born in 1996 averaged about 167.8 cm, a decline of more than 3 cm. Researchers have documented similar stagnation or reversal in several sub-Saharan African countries for cohorts born from the 1970s onward, a pattern generally linked to economic and nutritional conditions during childhood. Embiid's extraordinary size sits against that national backdrop.
His French citizenship adds a third comparison. NCD-RisC estimates that French men born in 1996 average about 179.7 cm, among the taller averages in Europe, so even against France Embiid stands more than 33 cm above the norm. It is worth remembering what these figures mean: each is the estimated average adult height of people born in a given year, built from hundreds of population surveys, not a measurement of everyone currently living in the country. A cohort figure for 1996 describes people who were about Embiid's age, which is why it is the fairest comparison for him.
