Real people the same height as Thanos
Thanos's official height: 6′7″ in the comics, far bigger on film
Marvel's Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe lists Thanos at 200.7 cm (6′7″) and 985 lb (447 kg). Those are the figures on the Marvel Database entry for the main comic-book continuity, Earth-616, and they are the canonical numbers this site uses for the Mad Titan.
Most people, though, picture the Thanos of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that version is a giant. CBR's 2021 ranking of MCU character heights puts the film Thanos at 8′3″ (about 251 cm), a figure Wikipedia's article on the MCU character cites when it notes that the films made him taller than in the comics. The difference between the two versions is roughly 50 cm, enough to turn a tall, heavy villain into a towering one.
| Version | Height | Weight | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comics (Earth-616) | 200.7 cm (6′7″) | 985 lb (447 kg) | Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe |
| Marvel Cinematic Universe | about 251 cm (8′3″) | Not published | CBR (cited by Wikipedia) |
There is one further wrinkle. CBR's article describes the comic-book Thanos as 6′3″. That does not match the Handbook figure of 6′7″ recorded on the Marvel Database, and this site follows the Handbook. The 6′3″ number appears to be an error or a reference to an older or alternate source. Where the film version is the relevant one, this site gives the 8′3″ figure separately rather than mixing the two.
Creating the Mad Titan
Thanos was created by Jim Starlin and debuted in The Invincible Iron Man #55, cover-dated February 1973, with Mike Friedrich co-scripting. Wikipedia's account of the character's creation says Starlin came up with the idea during a college psychology class, drawing on Freud's concept of a death drive and the related name Thanatos, which became the character's name.
His size and build were shaped by an editor. Roy Thomas, then running Marvel, asked Starlin to draw an issue of Iron Man. Starlin's early sketches of Thanos were thinner and more like Jack Kirby's Metron; Thomas told him to "beef him up" and to borrow from Kirby's Darkseid instead. The result is the heavy, broad-shouldered, square-jawed figure that has defined Thanos ever since. His Handbook weight of 985 lb reflects that bulk: he is listed at nearly 450 kg on a frame only a few inches taller than a tall human.
Thanos's most famous comic storyline is The Infinity Gauntlet (1991), in which he gathers the six Infinity Gems and uses them to wipe out half of all life in the universe to win the favor of Death. The story became one of Marvel's best-known events and the basis for the MCU's Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Thanos's family: a Titan among Titans
Thanos was born on Titan, the moon of Saturn colonized in Marvel lore by a branch of the Eternals. The Marvel Database's Earth-616 entry describes him as a Titanian Eternal born with the Deviant Syndrome, which is the comics' explanation for his gray, ridged skin and massive frame, so different from the human-looking Eternals around him. His brother Eros, the hero known as Starfox, makes the contrast clear.
| Character | Relationship to Thanos | Height | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thanos | — | 200.7 cm (6′7″) | 985 lb |
| Eros (Starfox) | Brother | 185 cm (6′1″) | 190 lb |
| Nebula | Claimed granddaughter in the comics; adopted daughter in the MCU | 185 cm (6′1″) | 185 lb |
| Gamora | Adopted daughter | 183 cm (6′0″) | 170 lb |
Eros is listed at 6′1″ and 190 lb, so the brothers differ by 15 cm in height and almost 800 lb in weight. That gap is the clearest sign of how exceptional Thanos's physique is even among his own people. Gamora and Nebula, the assassins he raised, are each tall at 6′0″ and 6′1″, but both are slender next to the 985-pound Titan.
Thanos and Darkseid
Because Starlin's Thanos was explicitly modeled on Jack Kirby's Darkseid, fans often compare the two. The DC Database lists Darkseid, the tyrant of Apokolips, at 8′9″ (266.7 cm) and 1,815 lb. The comic-book Thanos is therefore about 66 cm shorter and roughly 830 lb lighter than the villain who inspired him. Oddly, the MCU's 8′3″ Thanos comes much closer to Darkseid's comic height than to his own, so the film version can be read as a step back toward the Kirby original that Roy Thomas told Starlin to borrow from.
Josh Brolin and the 8′3″ film Thanos
In the films, Thanos is a digital character driven by performance capture. He first appeared in The Avengers (2012), played by Damion Poitier in a brief scene, and was then played by Josh Brolin in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and the first season of the animated What If...? (2021).
Brolin is listed at 178 cm (5′10″) on this site, so the actor is about 23 cm shorter than the comic-book Thanos and roughly 73 cm shorter than the 8′3″ film version. That gap had to be solved technically. According to Wikipedia's article on the MCU character, Digital Domain created Thanos for Infinity War and Endgame, handling more than 400 visual-effects shots. It built a machine-learning facial capture system called Masquerade, which combined data from ILM's Medusa facial scans with on-set motion capture to translate Brolin's expressions onto the much larger digital character. For some earlier scenes, director Joe Russo stood in for Thanos opposite Nebula wearing a headpiece with a cardboard image of the character's head.
| Figure | Height | Compared with comic Thanos (200.7 cm) |
|---|---|---|
| MCU Thanos (CBR) | about 251 cm (8′3″) | about 50 cm taller |
| Comic Thanos (Handbook) | 200.7 cm (6′7″) | — |
| Josh Brolin (actor) | 178 cm (5′10″) | 22.7 cm shorter |
The decision to make Thanos larger on film served the story. In the comics, he shares the page with cosmic beings far bigger than him, and his menace comes from his intelligence and the power he wields. On film, he stands among human-sized heroes, and a towering, heavy-set figure reads instantly as the strongest presence in any scene.
Thanos compared with Marvel's heroes
Here is how the comic-book Thanos compares with characters in this site's Marvel database, using Handbook heights.
| Character | Height | Difference from Thanos (200.7 cm) |
|---|---|---|

| Thanos | 200.7 cm (6′7″) | — |
| Thor | 198.1 cm (6′6″) | 2.6 cm shorter |
| Iron Man (in armor) | about 198 cm (6′6″) | about 3 cm shorter |
| Hawkeye | 190.5 cm (6′3″) | 10.2 cm shorter |
| Captain America | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 12.7 cm shorter |
| Doctor Strange | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 12.7 cm shorter |
| Iron Man (Tony Stark) | 185.4 cm (6′1″) | 15.3 cm shorter |
| Captain Marvel | 180.3 cm (5′11″) | 20.4 cm shorter |
| Spider-Man | 177.8 cm (5′10″) | 22.9 cm shorter |
| Black Widow | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | 30.5 cm shorter |
| Wolverine | 160.0 cm (5′3″) | 40.7 cm shorter |
Thanos and Thor
In the comics, Thor is listed at 6′6″, just an inch shorter than Thanos, and their battles are fought at nearly equal height. In weight, the Titan is heavier: 985 lb against Thor's 640 lb. In the MCU, the gap becomes dramatic. Thor's axe strike in Infinity War lands on an opponent who stands roughly 60 cm above Chris Hemsworth's listed 191 cm.
Thanos and Iron Man
Iron Man is listed at 6′1″ out of his armor and about 6′6″ in it. In the comics, an armored Tony Stark stands only a few centimeters below Thanos. In Endgame, the MCU's 8′3″ Thanos towers over the armored Iron Man of the films, which is part of what makes Stark's final act so striking: the smaller figure defeats the giant.
Thanos and Captain America
Captain America is listed at 6′2″, about 13 cm shorter than the comic Thanos. The scene in Endgame where Cap stands alone, shield broken, before Thanos's army gains its power from the size difference between the human hero and the film's much larger Titan.
Thanos in the MCU's tallest characters
CBR's ranking places the film Thanos near the top of the MCU's tall characters. Among the figures it lists, he is taller than the Hulk, whom CBR puts about an inch shorter, and than Ultron, estimated at about 8 feet from motion-capture performer Neil Fingleton. M'Baku and Ronan are given as 6′5″, Thor and Drax as 6′3″. Only characters who change size, such as Ant-Man at up to 65 feet, or non-human giants such as Groot and the dwarf Eitri, surpass him.
In the comics the picture is different. The Savage Hulk is listed on the Marvel Database at 7 to 8 feet, well above Thanos's 6′7″, so the comic Thanos is shorter than the Hulk while the film Thanos is slightly taller.
How size figures in Thanos's story
Thanos's weight and bulk have always been part of his menace, but his height in the comics is not extreme. At 6′7″ he is tall for a human, comparable to an NBA forward, and he moves among gods, cosmic entities and Celestials who are much larger. His power comes from his intellect, his ruthlessness and, in The Infinity Gauntlet, the gems themselves. Starlin's stories repeatedly show him outthinking stronger opponents and losing because of his own doubts rather than because anyone overpowers him physically. In that sense the comic Thanos is a tall, immensely heavy schemer, while the film Thanos is a giant warrior, and the 50 cm between their listed heights captures that change in emphasis.
The MCU approach flipped that emphasis. By making Thanos about 8′3″, the films made him physically dominant over every hero he fights, which suits a story in which the Avengers spend two films losing to him. The film Thanos is about as tall as the tallest living man in this site's data, Sultan Kösen, listed at 251 cm, and only about 21 cm shorter than Robert Wadlow, the tallest person in recorded history at 272 cm.
What 6′7″ and 8′3″ mean in the real world
At 200.7 cm, the comic-book Thanos is far taller than nearly all men. The CDC's 2021–2023 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey puts the median height of American men aged 20 and over at 175.2 cm and the 95th percentile at 187.2 cm. Thanos stands more than 13 cm above that 95th percentile, a height typical of professional basketball forwards. The 8′3″ film version, at about 251 cm, is outside the range of almost all human experience.
For comparison, Shaquille O'Neal, one of the largest NBA players of his era, is listed at 216 cm, about 15 cm taller than the comic Thanos and about 35 cm shorter than the film version. You can line up both versions of Thanos with Shaq, the Avengers or yourself in the height comparison tool, and the height difference calculator will show exactly how much bigger the films made him.
