How tall is DaBaby?
DaBaby is generally listed at 173 cm (5′8″), the figure this site uses. It is attributed to Billboard's 2019 cover story on the rapper, published as he was breaking through nationally. Unlike athletes, musicians have no official roster measurement, and DaBaby has not made a point of publishing his height. Other online references give figures between 5′7″ and 5′9″, but most cite no source at all. The honest summary is that he stands at roughly 5′8″, give or take an inch, which makes him a little shorter than the average American man.
His height has not been a major topic in serious music coverage. What has drawn attention is the way he uses his physical presence, through high-energy performances, slapstick music videos and a persona that makes him seem larger than life on screen. That gap between a medium build and a huge on-screen presence is the most interesting part of his height story.
Background: Cleveland to Charlotte
DaBaby was born Jonathan Lyndale Kirk in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 22, 1991; public records list December 21, but he has said his birthday is the 22nd. According to Stereogum's account of his career, his father served in the military in Afghanistan and Iraq, and his mother worked for a finance company. When he was about six, the family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, the city he is now most closely associated with.
He graduated from Zebulon B. Vance High School in 2010 and spent about two years at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro before leaving without a degree. He started rapping around 2014 under the name Baby Jesus, building a following through a string of mixtapes, including the Baby Talk series, and through relentless self-promotion in the Carolinas. A 2016 track, "Lightshow", went viral, and he later changed his stage name to DaBaby.
He also founded his own label, Billion Dollar Baby Entertainment, in Charlotte in 2017, and his music has been released through South Coast Music Group and, from 2019, Interscope Records.
Why rapper heights are hard to verify
DaBaby's height illustrates a common problem with musicians' measurements. Athletes are measured by teams and leagues, and actors at least appear beside co-stars of known height in carefully lit scenes. Rappers are photographed mostly at concerts, on red carpets and in music videos, where footwear, stage risers and camera angles all distort apparent height. A pair of chunky sneakers or boots can add 3 to 5 cm, and a low camera angle can add the appearance of much more.
Search for DaBaby's height and the result is a long list of near-identical pages giving 5′7″, 5′8″ or 5′9″, almost none of which cite a source. That pattern is typical: a single number appears somewhere, often in a magazine profile, and is then copied repeatedly. The most defensible approach is to use the figure from the most reputable publication available, here Billboard's 2019 cover story, and to treat it as accurate to within an inch or so.
When comparing him with other artists, the safest method is to look at photos where both people are standing side by side on the same level in similar footwear. Joint appearances with Dua Lipa, who is listed at the same 173 cm, are a natural reference point, but even then heels, sneakers and posture can easily shift the apparent difference by several centimeters in either direction, so no single photo settles the question.
The breakout years: 2019 and 2020
DaBaby's national breakthrough came in 2019, a year in which he released two albums, appeared on a long list of other artists' songs and signed with Interscope.
| Year | Release | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | Baby on Baby | Debut studio album; single "Suge" reached the Hot 100 top 10 |
| 2019 | Kirk | Debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 |
| 2020 | Blame It on Baby | Debuted at No. 1; "Rockstar" spent seven weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 |
| 2020 | "Levitating" remix with Dua Lipa | Peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 in 2021 |
| 2022 | Baby on Baby 2 | Fourth studio album |
"Suge" earned him two nominations at the 62nd Grammy Awards, for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. "Rockstar", featuring Roddy Ricch, became his biggest hit. Stereogum notes that it spread on TikTok after Blame It on Baby came out in April 2020, then topped the Hot 100 for seven non-consecutive weeks. It was nominated for Record of the Year at the 63rd Grammys.
Larger than life: persona, performance and videos
On stage and on screen, DaBaby rarely reads as a 5′8″ man. A big part of that is deliberate. His videos, many made with the production team Reel Goats, are built around slapstick comedy, costumes and stunts. Stereogum points to the "Walker Texas Ranger" video, in which he wears a cowboy hat and a truck goes over a cliff, as a typical example of the playful, over-the-top style that helped him stand out in 2019.
Before he was famous, he was already using spectacle to get noticed. Stereogum recounts that at South by Southwest in Austin in 2017, he walked Sixth Street wearing only a diaper to draw attention to his music, a stunt that fit the "Baby" persona.
The "Rockstar" video is another example. Directed by Reel Goats, it presents DaBaby as an action hero fighting through a zombie apocalypse. On screen, camera angles, framing and choreography matter far more than actual height, and music videos routinely make performers look taller or more imposing than they are. The result is that many fans picture him as bigger than his listed height.
Physical energy is central to his live shows too. Rapid, aggressive delivery and constant movement make him a commanding presence regardless of size, and in a genre where many stars are of ordinary height, presence counts for far more than inches.
The Rockstar remix and the 2020 BET Awards
One of DaBaby's most-discussed performances relied on staging rather than size. Weeks after the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, he released a "Black Lives Matter" remix of "Rockstar" with a new verse about police violence and systemic racism. Stereogum describes how, for the remote 2020 BET Awards broadcast, he and Roddy Ricch performed the remix in a staged sequence that opened with DaBaby lying on the ground under a police officer's knee. The image was designed to be uncomfortable, and it showed how much of his impact comes from visual storytelling.
Height comparisons with collaborators
DaBaby has worked with a wide range of artists, which makes for some interesting comparisons. Heights below come from this site's data.
| Artist | Collaboration | Height | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dua Lipa | "Levitating" remix (2020) | 173 cm (5′8″) | About the same |
| Megan Thee Stallion | "Cash Shit" (2019) | 178 cm (5′10″) | Megan 5 cm taller |
| Nicki Minaj | "iPhone" (2019) | 160 cm (5′3″) | DaBaby 13 cm taller |
| Post Malone | "Enemies" (2019) | 184 cm (6′0″) | Post Malone 11 cm taller |
| Kanye West | "Jail pt 2" (2021) | 173 cm (5′8″) | About the same |
| Drake | Fellow chart-topping rapper | 183 cm (6′0″) | Drake 10 cm taller |
Dua Lipa and "Levitating"
DaBaby's verse on the remix of Dua Lipa's "Levitating" turned the song into one of the biggest hits of 2021, peaking at No. 2 on the Hot 100. The two are listed at almost exactly the same height, so on paper they are eye to eye, with footwear deciding who looks taller on any given night.
Megan Thee Stallion
DaBaby featured on Megan Thee Stallion's 2019 single "Cash Shit". Megan, at about 178 cm, is around 5 cm taller than DaBaby, and in heels the gap can look considerably larger. She is one of a number of female artists in hip-hop who are taller than many of their male peers.
Nicki Minaj
On Kirk, DaBaby collaborated with Nicki Minaj on "iPhone". Minaj, listed at 160 cm, is about 13 cm shorter, so DaBaby has a clear height advantage in that pairing.
Height in hip-hop: where DaBaby fits
Hip-hop has never had a height norm in the way that basketball or modeling does. Some of the genre's most influential artists are below average height, and others are tall, with no obvious link between size and success. Using this site's data:
| Artist | Height | Compared with DaBaby |
|---|---|---|
| Kendrick Lamar | 165 cm (5′5″) | 8 cm shorter |
| Nicki Minaj | 160 cm (5′3″) | 13 cm shorter |
| Kanye West | 173 cm (5′8″) | About the same |
| DaBaby | 173 cm (5′8″) | — |
| Megan Thee Stallion | 178 cm (5′10″) | 5 cm taller |
| Drake | 183 cm (6′0″) | 10 cm taller |
| Post Malone | 184 cm (6′0″) | 11 cm taller |
The spread runs from about 160 cm to more than 183 cm among artists who have all topped the charts. DaBaby sits right in the middle. If anything, the table shows how little height predicts success in the genre: Kendrick Lamar, one of the most acclaimed rappers of his era, is the shortest man on the list, while the tallest, Post Malone, made his name mostly through melodic crossover hits.
How 173 cm compares around the world
While DaBaby is slightly shorter than average in the United States, 173 cm would be average or above average for men in many countries. NCD-RisC estimates for men born in 1996 illustrate the range:
| Country | Average adult male height | DaBaby's margin |
|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | 182.5 cm | −9.5 cm |
| Germany | 179.9 cm | −6.9 cm |
| United States | 177.1 cm | −4.1 cm |
| Brazil | 173.6 cm | About average |
| China | 171.8 cm | +1.2 cm |
| Japan | 170.8 cm | +2.2 cm |
| Mexico | 169.0 cm | +4.0 cm |
| Nigeria | 165.9 cm | +7.1 cm |
| India | 164.9 cm | +8.1 cm |
In other words, a man of DaBaby's height would look tall in Mexico, Nigeria or India and slightly short in the Netherlands or Germany. Height is relative to the population around you, which is one reason the same person can be described very differently in different countries. The United States average height page explains how these birth-cohort estimates are produced and why they differ from self-reported surveys.
Controversy and its effect on his career
In July 2021, DaBaby made remarks at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami that were widely criticized as homophobic. Several festivals and brands dropped him afterward, and some radio stations removed his credit from "Levitating". He later apologized. The episode marked a turning point in his commercial momentum, and his later albums did not match the chart success of 2019 and 2020. He has also been involved in several legal matters over the years, which have been covered extensively elsewhere and are not related to his height.
Compared with the average American man
According to the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, American men born in the early 1990s reached an average adult height of about 177 cm (5′9.7″). At about 173 cm, DaBaby is roughly 4 cm (1.5 inches) shorter than that average.
| Group | Average height | DaBaby at 173 cm |
|---|---|---|
| US men born 1996 | 177.1 cm | −4.4 cm |
| US men born 1976 | 177.5 cm | −4.8 cm |
| US women born 1996 | 163.5 cm | +9.2 cm |
That places him somewhere around the 25th to 30th percentile for American men, slightly below the middle of the distribution; the height percentile calculator gives the exact figure. The 173 cm to feet page has the conversion and a list of other famous people at that height. For context, 173 cm is also close to the average height for men in many countries, as the table above shows.
Why DaBaby's height is a non-issue
Height matters in some fields, such as basketball, modeling and acting, where casting directors think carefully about how performers look next to each other. In hip-hop, it matters very little. Many of the genre's most influential artists are of average or below-average height, and success depends on voice, writing, delivery, charisma and timing.
DaBaby's career illustrates that clearly. A rapper of roughly average height became one of the most visible artists in the United States in 2019 and 2020 by building a persona that seemed bigger than life: comic, aggressive, relentless and highly visual. His 5′8″ frame was never a limitation, and on screen it was often hard to notice at all. To see how he compares with his collaborators, try the height comparison tool.
