That figure appears on the official StarWars.com Databank, Lucasfilm's own reference for the franchise, and it matches the height printed in DK's The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia, which is the citation this site uses for him. Converted precisely, 228 cm is 89.8 inches, or 7 feet 5.8 inches, so "seven foot six" is the natural rounding in imperial units.

Other references round the metric value too. Wikipedia's article on the character describes him as 7.5 feet (2.3 m) tall, which is the same number expressed to fewer decimal places. Figures well above that, sometimes quoted by fan sites, do not appear in the current official references. For a height chart, 2.28 m is the value to trust: it is the number Lucasfilm publishes today.

How tall Chewbacca is compared with other Wookiees

The Databank's species entry for Wookiees lists a height of 2 m and describes them as shaggy giants from the forest world of Kashyyyk, where they build their homes high in enormous trees. Chewbacca's personal entry gives 2.28 m, which places him about 28 cm above that species benchmark. In human terms, that is the difference between a man of average height and one who stands a full head taller than everyone at a party.

That gap fits how the films treat him. Other Wookiees appear on Kashyyyk in Revenge of the Sith and in the Clone Wars animated series, and Chewbacca never looks small among them. He is a large member of a large species. The species figure is also a reminder that "Wookiee height" is not one number: the Databank's 2 m is a reference value, and individual Wookiees in the films vary around it.

Chewbacca and Han Solo

The partnership at the center of the original trilogy is also its most lopsided pairing by height. The Databank lists Han Solo at 1.8 m, so Chewbacca stands 48 cm taller than his best friend, almost exactly the length of a forearm and hand. According to the Databank, the two met in an Imperial prison on Mimban, where Chewbacca was being kept as a captive nicknamed the Beast, and Han persuaded him that they could escape together. Every scene of the pair in the Falcon's cockpit plays on that contrast: Han lounging in the pilot's seat, Chewbacca hunched in the co-pilot's chair with his head close to the ceiling panels.

Chewbacca and Darth Vader

Darth Vader is the only major original-trilogy character who comes close. His listed 2.03 m is measured in armor, helmet included, and he still falls about 25 cm short of the Wookiee. The two rarely share a frame, but when Chewbacca is captured on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back, the scale difference between the Sith Lord and his prisoner is visible: Vader is imposing because of his costume and posture, while Chewbacca simply is bigger.

Chewbacca and the smallest characters

At the other end of the chart, Yoda at 66 cm and Grogu at 34 cm would barely reach Chewbacca's knee. Grogu is about one-seventh of the Wookiee's height. Even Leia, at 155 cm, stands roughly at the level of Chewbacca's chest, which is why her first meeting with him in the Death Star rescue reads as a joke about scale.

The actors behind the height: Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo

Chewbacca's size on screen begins with two unusually tall performers.

Peter Mayhew was born in 1944 in Barnes, Surrey, and Wikipedia lists his peak height at 7′3″ (221 cm). His height was the reason he got the part. According to his biography, George Lucas initially considered David Prowse for the Wookiee, but Prowse chose to play Darth Vader instead. When Mayhew met Lucas about the casting call and stood up to greet him, he was hired almost on the spot. He worked as a hospital orderly in Surrey and kept that job between the original-trilogy shoots. Mayhew played Chewbacca in Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), the 1978 Holiday Special, Revenge of the Sith (2005) and The Force Awakens (2015). He died in 2019 at age 74.

Joonas Suotamo, a Finnish former basketball player, is listed at 6′11″ (211 cm). He played power forward and center for Penn State from 2005 to 2008, then spent seven seasons in Finnish leagues, including four in the top-tier Korisliiga, and played three games for Finland's national team. Suotamo started as Mayhew's body double in The Force Awakens, took over the role fully in The Last Jedi (2017) with Mayhew as a consultant, and continued in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Neither performer is quite as tall as the character. The costume head, with its raised crown of hair, and the oversized feet add height, so the actor and the Wookiee are not the same measurement. That is also why Suotamo, about 10 cm shorter than Mayhew, could step into the suit without the character visibly shrinking: costume, camera placement and the heights of the actors around him all contribute to how big Chewbacca reads in a scene.

How Chewbacca's size was built into the design

Chewbacca's height was part of the concept from the start. Wikipedia's account of his creation says George Lucas modeled the character partly on his Alaskan Malamute, Indiana, who rode in the passenger seat of his car like a co-pilot. A huge, loyal, furry companion sitting next to the pilot is exactly what ended up on screen.

The costume was built to sell that bulk. For the original trilogy and the Holiday Special, the suit was made from yak hair, rabbit hair and mohair; the version built for The Force Awakens used yak hair, Lycra and a small amount of mohair. Long hair hanging from the shoulders and arms widens the silhouette and hides the performer's frame, so the character reads as much broader than a lean 7-foot man.

Sound completes the effect. Sound designer Ben Burtt created the Wookiee's roars by mixing recordings of bears, a badger, a lion, a seal and a walrus, and Mayhew built his physical performance on animals he watched in zoos. Large animals produce deep, resonant calls, so the voice tells the audience how big Chewbacca is even when he is off screen.

Age and height: a 190-year-old who is still in his prime

Wookiees are long-lived in Star Wars canon. In Solo: A Star Wars Story, set roughly ten years before A New Hope, Chewbacca tells Han he is 190 years old. That makes him around 200 during the original trilogy and well past that by The Rise of Skywalker, yet he never appears frail. His height has stayed fixed at 2.28 m across every era in which he appears, from the Clone Wars, when the Databank notes he was captured by Trandoshan hunters and freed alongside Ahsoka Tano, through the sequel trilogy, where he survives Han's death and fights with the Resistance at Exegol.

Because Wookiees reach full size long before the events of the films, there is no "young Chewbacca" height to track the way there is for human characters like Luke or Rey. The number you see on the Databank applies to every film he is in.

What 228 cm means in the real world

To put Chewbacca's height in human terms, compare it with real averages. Our World in Data, summarizing the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration's global dataset, puts the average man born in 1996 at about 171 cm worldwide. Chewbacca is 57 cm taller than that, a full third again. Against the national figures on this site's average height by country pages, he towers over even the tallest populations: the Netherlands, with an average adult male height of about 182.5 cm, still falls around 46 cm short.

Only a handful of real people approach his height:

• Yao Ming, the retired Houston Rockets center, is listed at 229 cm on this site, 1 cm taller than Chewbacca. Side by side they would look level.
• Shaquille O'Neal is listed at 216 cm, about 12 cm shorter than the Wookiee.
• Joonas Suotamo at 211 cm and Peter Mayhew at 221 cm, the two men who played him, both fall below the character's listed height.

At 228 cm he is taller than any of the human performers around him, including the 221 cm Mayhew himself, which is why the Falcon cockpit scenes frame him hunched beside Han.
