Real people the same height as Joker
The Joker's official height: a surprisingly tall 6′5″
DC lists the Joker at 195.6 cm (6′5″) and 192 lb (87 kg). The figures appear in the DC Comics Encyclopedia (2008) for the "New Earth" continuity, and the DC Database records exactly the same numbers for the current "Prime Earth" version, citing the DC Comics Encyclopedia: All-New Edition. Unlike Wonder Woman, whose listing changed between continuities, the Joker's height and weight have stayed fixed across DC's modern reference works.
Many readers are surprised by this, and the surprise is understandable. The Joker is usually remembered as a wiry, manic figure rather than an imposing one, and the most famous screen portrayals have been by actors of ordinary height. But in DC's official data, Batman's archenemy is one of the tallest human characters in Gotham City, three inches taller than the Dark Knight himself.
| Continuity | Height | Weight | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Earth (1987–2011) | 195.6 cm (6′5″) | 192 lb (87 kg) | DC Comics Encyclopedia (2008) |
| Prime Earth (2011–present) | 195.6 cm (6′5″) | 192 lb (87 kg) | DC Comics Encyclopedia: All-New Edition |
A 6′5″ frame carrying only 192 lb describes a very slender man. That proportion is the key to the character's look: long limbs, narrow shoulders and an elongated face, all exaggerated by his purple suit.
How the Joker got tall: from 1940 to the 1970s redesign
The Joker debuted in Batman #1, published on April 25, 1940. Wikipedia's account of his creation credits Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson, though their accounts of who contributed what conflict and the credit remains disputed. Finger showed the others a still of actor Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine in the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs, whose permanent grin became the basis for the Joker's face. Robinson produced a sketch of a joker playing card that helped fix the concept.
His height grew over time. According to Wikipedia, artist Neal Adams's 1973 redesign moved the character away from his "more average figure," extending his jaw and making him taller and leaner. Later artists, including Marshall Rogers, who gave him a fedora and trench coat, kept that elongated silhouette. The 6′5″ figure in DC's encyclopedias formalizes what artists had already established: the Joker is a long, thin, unsettling presence who looms over his victims.
There is a visual logic to it. Batman's silhouette is broad and heavy, built around a cape and cowl. The Joker's is vertical and spindly. Making him taller than Batman gives the pair contrasting shapes in every panel, which is one reason their confrontations read so clearly even in silhouette.
The Joker compared with Batman and the DC universe
Here is how the Joker compares with other characters in this site's DC database, using the encyclopedia figures.
| Character | Height | Difference from Joker (195.6 cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Darkseid | 266.7 cm (8′9″) | 71.1 cm taller |
| Bane | 203.2 cm (6′8″) | 7.6 cm taller |
| Cyborg | 198.1 cm (6′6″) | 2.5 cm taller |
| Deathstroke | 195.6 cm (6′5″) | Same height |
| Superman | 190.5 cm (6′3″) | 5.1 cm shorter |
| Batman | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 7.6 cm shorter |
| Lex Luthor | 188.0 cm (6′2″) | 7.6 cm shorter |
| Aquaman | 185.4 cm (6′1″) | 10.2 cm shorter |
| Wonder Woman | 182.9 cm (6′0″) | 12.7 cm shorter |
| The Flash | 180.3 cm (5′11″) | 15.3 cm shorter |
| Catwoman | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | 25.4 cm shorter |
| Harley Quinn | 170.2 cm (5′7″) | 25.4 cm shorter |
The Joker and Batman
The defining rivalry in DC Comics pits a 6′5″ clown against a 6′2″ detective. Batman is listed at 188 cm, so the Joker is 7.6 cm, about 3 inches, taller. The 2008 encyclopedia gives Batman 210 lb to the Joker's 192, so the hero is the heavier man, but in pure height the villain has the edge. Many artists draw the two as roughly equal, partly because Batman's pointed cowl ears add apparent height, but the official numbers favor the Joker.
The Joker and Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn, the former Arkham psychiatrist Harleen Quinzel, is listed at 5′7″ (170.2 cm), making the Joker 25.4 cm taller. That gap, about 10 inches, is visible in nearly every depiction of the pair and plays into the power imbalance at the heart of their toxic relationship, which later stories have deliberately broken apart as Harley became a hero in her own right.
The Joker and the rest of Gotham
Among Batman's other enemies in our data, the Joker matches Deathstroke exactly at 6′5″ and is 3 inches shorter than Bane, the 6′8″ villain who famously broke Batman's back. He is 5 cm taller than Superman and nearly 13 cm taller than Wonder Woman. In other words, a man with no superpowers is listed as taller than most of the Justice League.
The Joker among Batman's rogues gallery
Batman's enemies are one of the most varied casts in comics, and the DC Database's listings, most of them from the 2008 DC Comics Encyclopedia, show where the Joker fits. He is one of the tallest of the human villains.
| Villain | Height | Weight | Compared with the Joker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Killer Croc (Waylon Jones) | 226 cm (7′5″) | 686 lb | 30.5 cm taller |
| Bane | 203 cm (6′8″) | — | 7.6 cm taller |
| Joker | 196 cm (6′5″) | 192 lb | — |
| Ra's al Ghul | 196 cm (6′5″) | 215 lb | Same height |
| Riddler (Edward Nygma) | 185 cm (6′1″) | 183 lb | 10.2 cm shorter |
| Two-Face (Harvey Dent) | 183 cm (6′0″) | 182 lb | 12.7 cm shorter |
| Scarecrow (Jonathan Crane) | 183 cm (6′0″) | 140 lb | 12.7 cm shorter |
| Mr. Freeze (Victor Fries) | 183 cm (6′0″) | 190 lb | 12.7 cm shorter |
| Poison Ivy (Pamela Isley) | 168 cm (5′6″) | 110 lb | 27.9 cm shorter |
| Penguin (Oswald Cobblepot) | 157 cm (5′2″) | 175 lb | 38.1 cm shorter |
Only the physically transformed or augmented villains, Killer Croc with his reptilian condition and Bane with his Venom-enhanced strength, stand taller than the Joker. Among the ordinary humans, he shares the top spot with Ra's al Ghul, the centuries-old leader of the League of Assassins, who is also listed at 6′5″. The two most cerebral villains, the Joker and Ra's, are therefore the tallest unaltered men in Batman's world.
The bottom of the table is just as telling. The Penguin is listed at 5′2″, a full 38 cm shorter than the Joker. The two are often shown working together or competing for Gotham's underworld, and their extreme height contrast, a towering, thin clown beside a short, stout gangster, is one of the more striking visual pairings in Batman comics. The Scarecrow shows a similar build to the Joker's in a smaller frame: six feet but only 140 lb, the lightest man in the table.
The actors who played the Joker
None of the major live-action Jokers has matched the comic-book height, and most have been considerably shorter. The table uses heights from this site's people database where available.
| Actor | Production | Year | Listed height |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cesar Romero | Batman (TV series and film) | 1966–1968 | 190 cm (6′3″) |
| Jack Nicholson | Batman | 1989 | 177 cm (5′10″) |
| Heath Ledger | The Dark Knight | 2008 | Not in our data |
| Jared Leto | Suicide Squad; Zack Snyder's Justice League | 2016, 2021 | Not in our data |
| Joaquin Phoenix | Joker; Joker: Folie à Deux | 2019, 2024 | 173 cm (5′8″) |
| Barry Keoghan | The Batman (cameo) | 2022 | 172 cm (5′8″) |
Cesar Romero, who played the character in the 1966 Batman series and its film as a cackling prankster, comes closest at 190 cm, still about 6 cm short of the comic figure. Jack Nicholson, whose Joker in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman helped the film earn more than $400 million worldwide, is listed at 177 cm. Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Joker (2019), is listed at 173 cm, more than 22 cm shorter than the comic-book character. Heath Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight (2008), the first acting Oscar for a superhero film.
The screen Batmen were usually taller than their Jokers, reversing the comic-book relationship. Robert Pattinson, Batman in The Batman (2022), is listed at 185 cm, 13 cm taller than Barry Keoghan's Joker. Ben Affleck, Batman in the DC Extended Universe, is listed at 192 cm. Christian Bale, opposite Ledger in The Dark Knight, is listed at 183 cm. Filmmakers have clearly felt free to drop the Joker's height in favor of performance.
The voice of the Joker
For many fans, the definitive Joker is a voice. Mark Hamill voiced the character in Batman: The Animated Series beginning in 1992 and went on to voice him across animation and video games, including the Batman: Arkham series, for which he won several awards. In animation the Joker is usually drawn tall and thin, much closer to the encyclopedia's 6′5″ than most live-action versions.
How the Joker's height figures in his stories
DC has never made the Joker's height a story point, and in most comics it is simply part of his design. The long, thin silhouette makes him visually distinct from the bulky heroes and henchmen around him, and it lends his movements a theatrical, puppet-like quality. When artists want him menacing, they stretch him further, looming over a captive or filling a doorway. When they want him absurd, his gangly limbs flail.
The contrast with his weight matters too. At 192 lb, he is 18 lb lighter than Batman's encyclopedia listing of 210 lb despite being 3 inches taller. The Joker almost never wins a fair fight with Batman; he relies on chemicals, traps and unpredictability, which suits a tall but slight frame.
What 6′5″ means in the real world
At 195.6 cm, the Joker is very tall by any real-world standard. The CDC's 2021–2023 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey puts the median height of American men aged 20 and over at 175.2 cm and the 95th percentile at 187.2 cm. The Joker stands more than 8 cm above that 95th percentile, a height reached by only a small fraction of American men. NCD-RisC estimates that men born in 1996 in the United States average 177.1 cm, so he is about 18.5 cm taller than the typical American man of a recent generation.
Two familiar celebrities make the height easy to picture. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Momoa are both listed at 195.6 cm on this site, exactly the Joker's encyclopedia height. The comic-book Joker is, in other words, as tall as The Rock, but with roughly the build of a long-distance runner rather than a wrestler, which is precisely the unsettling combination his artists have aimed for since the 1970s.
The height difference calculator will show the exact gap between the Joker and Batman, Harley Quinn or yourself, and the height comparison tool can line up the comic-book Joker beside each of his screen actors at true scale, which makes the difference between page and screen easy to see.
