Creating Leon

Wikipedia's account of the character's development credits creative director Hideki Kamiya and writer Noboru Sugimura with shaping Leon for Resident Evil 2. In the Resident Evil 1.5 prototype, Leon was an experienced officer. Sugimura felt that version lacked depth and rewrote him as a young recruit arriving in Raccoon City on what should have been his first day, which became the defining premise of the 1998 game.
