Standing height versus shoulder height

Ranking animals by height means first deciding which height to compare. A person is measured standing straight, from floor to crown. A horse is measured to the withers, the ridge between its shoulder blades, because a horse's head moves all the time while the withers stay put. Zoo fact sheets usually give shoulder height for four-legged mammals and standing height for animals that stand upright or can rear up, such as giraffes, ostriches, penguins and bears.

This list follows the measure each source gives and labels it, so the numbers are not all the same kind. A bull moose at 213 cm to the shoulder stands taller overall than that figure suggests once you add its head and antlers. A gorilla at 183 cm is measured standing upright on two legs. Keep that in mind when you compare neighbors in the ranking.

Giraffe: the tallest animal by a long way

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) describes giraffes as the tallest land animals and gives adult males a height of up to 18 ft (5.5 m) and females up to 14 ft (4.3 m). Calves are already about 6 ft (1.8 m) tall at birth, taller than most adult people. SDZWA notes that a giraffe's legs alone are about 6 ft long, and its heart, about 2 ft long, has to pump blood a very long way up to the brain.

The SDZWA library fact sheet adds detail from field measurements published by Ciofolo and Le Pendu (2013). Adult males averaged 3.31 m at the shoulder and females 2.80 m, and males averaged about 1,192 kg against roughly 828 kg for females. The same sheet gives a "total length" of about 5.05 m for males, but that is measured from snout to tail tip, not from the ground up, so it shouldn't be confused with standing height. The sheet explains that the apparent slope of a giraffe's back comes from tall spines on the vertebrae of the upper back, not from longer front legs; the legs are roughly equal in length.

The comparison with people is striking. Even Yao Ming, listed at 229 cm, would come up to roughly 42% of a big bull giraffe's height. Put the two side by side in the 3D height comparison tool to see how much of the giraffe is neck.

What it takes to be that tall

Height brings real engineering problems, and the giraffe shows them clearly. Wikipedia's giraffe article, drawing on the physiology literature, says the animal's heart weighs about 11 kg (25 lb), is about 60 cm (2 ft) long, and must produce roughly double the blood pressure a human needs to keep blood flowing to the brain. To drink, a giraffe has to splay its front legs or bend its knees to bring its head down to the water, and when water is available it goes no more than three days without drinking.

The benefit is food that nothing else can reach. The same article describes the "competing browsers hypothesis", first suggested by Charles Darwin, which proposes that competition from smaller browsers such as kudu, steenbok and impala favored longer necks. It notes that the feeding advantage is real: giraffes feed up to about 4.5 m (15 ft) high, while even large competitors such as kudu reach only about 2 m. The hypothesis itself has been challenged in recent research, and the article presents it as one explanation among several.

Even birth involves a drop. SDZWA explains that a calf is born front feet first, and because the umbilical cord is only about 1 m long it breaks partway through delivery, so the newborn falls to the ground. Even so, SDZWA lists the calf's height at birth as about 1.8 m (6 ft), taller than most adult humans.

Elephants: the tallest animals measured at the shoulder

Elephants are the clear second, and they hold that place on shoulder height alone. SDZWA's African elephant fact sheet gives male savanna elephants a shoulder height of 2.9–3.7 m (9.5–12 ft) and females 2.5–3.0 m, usually no more than 2.6 m. Populations differ: the sheet notes that female elephants in their 30s at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are usually about 2.3 m (7.5 ft) tall, possibly reflecting the population they came from. It cites Poole and colleagues (2013) for large males exceeding 3.5 m, and notes that only giraffes are taller. African forest elephants are much smaller: in one population studied by Turkalo, males averaged about 2.3 m and females about 2.0 m at the shoulder.

Asian elephants are shorter again. The SDZWA Asian elephant sheet gives an average shoulder height of 2.7 m for males, up to 3.4 m, and 2.4 m for females. Weight separates the species even more: an average male African savanna elephant weighs about 6,000 kg, compared with about 3,600 kg for an Asian male.

Animals that stand up: bears, ostriches and penguins

Some of the most surprising entries owe their place to posture.

  • Polar bear. The National Wildlife Federation says a large male may weigh up to 1,500 lb and stand nearly 10 ft tall on its hind legs. Females reach about 8 ft and usually weigh 550 lb or less. The NWF also reports a record male, shot in Alaska in 1960, that weighed 2,210 lb and stood 12 ft tall.
  • Grizzly bear. The National Park Service gives an adult grizzly a shoulder height of 3–4 ft (about 1 m) on all fours and about 8 ft (2.4 m) standing upright. The difference shows how much a measuring method can change a ranking: on all fours, a grizzly would rank alongside a Shetland pony or a male lion.
  • Ostrich. The ostrich is the largest and heaviest living bird. PBS Nature gives males a height of 6.9 to 9 ft and a weight of 220 to 287 lb, and females 5.7 to 6.2 ft.
  • Emperor penguin. The largest penguin species stands about 45 in (114 cm) on average, according to PBS Nature. It is the only bird other than the ostrich on the list.

Hoofed giants: moose, camels and rhinos

The NPS describes adult moose in Rocky Mountain National Park as standing five to seven feet at the shoulder on average. Bulls grow palmate antlers up to five feet across and up to 77 lb in weight. This site uses about 7 ft (213 cm) for a large Alaskan bull.

Camels come next. The SDZWA camel fact sheet gives dromedaries, the one-humped species, a shoulder height of 1.8–2.0 m. Bactrian camels, with two humps, are 1.6–1.8 m. The sheet notes that dromedaries have longer, more slender legs, which keep the body farther from the hot ground.

The white rhinoceros reaches 170–185 cm at the shoulder according to SDZWA, with males weighing about 2,300 kg. Its head-and-body length of 3.6–4.2 m is more than twice its shoulder height, so it reads as long and low rather than tall.

Primates, kangaroos and big cats

Two primates appear in the upright-height section of the list. The Smithsonian's National Zoo says adult male western lowland gorillas stand up to 6 ft (1.8 m) tall, with an arm span of about 8 ft, while females reach about 4.5 ft. A male gorilla standing upright is taller than the average US man, whom the CDC's 2021–2023 NHANES survey puts at 175.1 cm.

The red kangaroo is a good example of how posture changes a measurement. SDZWA gives a normal standing height of about 1.5 m but notes that a kangaroo up on its toes can reach almost 2 m. This list uses the relaxed figure.

Among the cats, Guinness World Records names the Siberian or Amur tiger as the largest wild cat. Males measure 0.99–1.07 m at the shoulder, 2.7–3.3 m from nose to tail tip, and weigh 180–306 kg. That makes the tiger slightly shorter at the shoulder than an adult male lion on this list, at 123 cm, even though the tiger is the heavier animal. Guinness also records a captive male liger, a lion–tiger hybrid named Hercules, at 1.25 m at the shoulder and 418.2 kg.

Domestic animals as a size reference

The list ends with familiar farm and household animals, which are useful as a mental ruler for the wild species above them. Horse heights on this list are taken at the withers and come from breed standards: a Shire stallion averages about 17.2 hands (178 cm), a Thoroughbred about 16 hands (163 cm), and a registered Shetland pony may be no more than 42 in (107 cm). One hand equals 4 in, so 16 hands is 64 in. A Holstein dairy cow stands about 147 cm at the shoulder, and a typical domestic cat about 25 cm. Use the height converter to switch any of these between hands, inches and centimeters.

Comparing animals with people and landmarks

The gap between the top and bottom of this list is large: the bull giraffe is 22 times the height of a house cat. The top six animals all stand taller than 231 cm, the listed height of Manute Bol and Gheorghe Mureșan, the tallest players on this site's NBA list. Shaquille O'Neal, listed at 216 cm, would stand a little above a large dromedary's shoulder (200 cm) and well below a grizzly on its hind legs (244 cm).

Every animal here is in the catalog of the 3D height comparison tool, where you can line them up against people, buildings or each other. For related rankings, the tallest lists hub collects the lists of buildings, statues and people, and the average height hub gives the human baseline country by country.

Tallest Animals in the World FAQ

Is a giraffe taller than an elephant?

Yes, by a wide margin. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance gives adult male giraffes a height of up to 5.5 m (18 ft) to the top of the head, while the largest male African savanna elephants reach about 3.7 m at the shoulder. Even a giraffe's shoulder, about 3.3 m on average in males, is close to a big elephant's.

Why are some animals measured at the shoulder?

Four-legged animals carry their heads at different angles, so zoologists usually measure the highest fixed point of the body, the shoulder or withers, which gives a repeatable number. Animals that stand upright, such as giraffes, ostriches and penguins, or that can rear up, such as bears, are often quoted by full standing height instead.

How tall is a polar bear standing up?

The National Wildlife Federation says a large male polar bear can be nearly 10 ft (about 3 m) tall standing on its hind legs, and that females stand up to about 8 ft. A record male shot in Alaska in 1960 stood about 12 ft tall.

What is the tallest bird?

The ostrich. PBS Nature's fact sheet gives males a height of 6.9 to 9 ft and females 5.7 to 6.2 ft. This site lists an adult male at about 2.75 m (9 ft).

Is a gorilla taller than a person?

An adult male western lowland gorilla standing upright is up to about 6 ft (1.8 m) tall, according to the Smithsonian's National Zoo. That is taller than the average US man at 175.1 cm, and a male's arm span is about 8 ft.

How big is the largest big cat?

Guinness World Records names the Siberian or Amur tiger as the largest wild cat. Males stand 0.99 to 1.07 m at the shoulder and measure 2.7 to 3.3 m from nose to tail tip. A captive liger named Hercules is larger still, at 1.25 m at the shoulder.

Who or what is #1 on the tallest animals in the world list?

Giraffe (Adult Male) tops the list at 550 cm (18′1″), 180 cm ahead of African Elephant (Male), at 370 cm (12′2″).

How much taller is #1 than #22?

At 550 cm (18′1″), Giraffe (Adult Male) is 2065.4% taller than Cat (Domestic), at 25.4 cm (0′10″). The average of the 22 entries is 201.1 cm (6′7″).
